The Eisenhower farm bill has hit some snags in Congress and House leaders are forecasting they won’t clear a bill before April, too late to help farmers much this year.
The Hoosier Spring Barrow Show will be staged at the Indianapolis state fairgrounds next week. One of the top events of the year for Indiana swine producers, the seventh annual show will feature 56 classes of purebred and crossbred barrows of eight recognized breeds. Premiums total more than $5,000 for the show.
The Knightstown 4-H Poultry and Egg Judging team won the Henry County judging contest at New Castle. Members of the winning team are Jack Avery, Kenneth Masters, Richard Craig, Joe Irwin, Philip Walker and Dale Spears, Avery took home a first-place individual award.

Gayle Sheets of Osgood received the District Tree Farmer of the Year award. Sheets is a teacher at Batesville High School and operates a 250-acre farm with 175 acres in trees. He is known for his Christmas trees, and presented one to the White House in 1968.
Five Decatur County youths were among Indiana’s top young corn and soybean growers recognized at the annual Junior Crop Growers Jamboree at Purdue University. They were: Kendall Hadler of Greensburg, Doug Richardson and Bill Galloway of Westport and Dennis Holtkamp of Greensburg.
The best protection against Southern Corn Leaf Blight damage this year is in adapted hybrid seed corn with the N (normal) cytoplasm, pointed out Purdue extension specialists.

State veterinarians in Indiana and Ohio have issued emergency orders stopping the importation of live poultry or hatching eggs originating from states having avian influenza. That includes accessories used in handling live poultry or their hatching eggs, as well as the transporting vehicles.
More than 80 members and guests attended the Indiana State FFA Leadership Development Workshop at the FFA Center near Trafalgar.
State officers conducted the workshop: Lisa Moss, president; Matthew Kirkpatrick, secretary; Scott Strong, vice president; Tom Knollman, vice president; Greg Curlin, treasurer; Tricia Bry, reporter; and Patti Ghere, sentinel.
Debbie Virts of Champaign County was crowned as the 1986 Ohio Queen of Beef during the Ohio Cattlemen’s Assoc. convention. First runner-up was Nancy Secrest, Noble County, and the second runner-up was Jill Goodbar, Clark County. Jenny White of Adams County is the retiring 1985 Ohio Queen of Beef.

The former manager of one of Kentucky’s most prestigious beef cattle farms, Harvey W. Mitchell of the Anderson Circle Farm in Harrodsburg, has been named chief of staff for Kentucky Agriculture, announced by Commissioner Billy Ray Smith.
