John E. Clum
March 4, 2011

THURSTON, Ohio — Longtime auctioneer John E. Clum died Friday, March 4. He was known throughout the Midwest, calling bids for the family business, Mike Clum Inc. Auction Co. in Rushville.

He was 92 years old.

Prior to becoming an auctioneer, Clum owned the former Wolfe Trucking Co.
“A lot of people have always thought this was a father-son operation,” said Mike Clum, an owner of the Clum auction company.

“But, my wife and I started this business in 1968. After dad sold his trucking business in the 1970s, he started hanging around our sales. I jokingly said to him, ‘rather than just sitting around, why don’t you help some and I’ll put you on the payroll.’ He was in his late 50s or so then.

“He started helping by carrying things, and setting up sales, and I began teasing him, saying: ‘why don’t you go to auctioneer’s school … and darned if he didn’t.”

Around the mid-1970s, John Clum became a permanent fixture on the auctioneer podium.

“So, it ended up being a son-father business,” Mike Clum added.
John E. Clum was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and was twice a Past Master member of the Baltimore Masonic Lodge No. 475 F&AM, the Scottish Rite and the Tarhe Shrine Club. He was a 1936 graduate of Thornville High School, a member of the Rushville Lions Club, and an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jane Clum.

Memorials may be given to the Thurston United Church or The Pickering House in John’s memory.
