Preble Shawnee FFA hosts district contests
CAMDEN, Ohio — On Friday, Feb. 18, the Preble Shawnee FFA Chapter hosted the District 5 Agricultural and Industrial Diagnostics contests.
The contests consisted of teams of two students each that had to troubleshoot five different pieces of agricultural or industrial equipment. Two “bugs” were placed into each machine, and the students had 20 minutes at each station to figure out what those “bugs” were. In these contests, the “bugs” can range from air issues to electrical issues. Each team also takes an on-line exam prior to the hands-on portion of the contest.
There were 14 different schools from District Five that participated in the contest. David Terrell and Knox Wilson represented the Preble Shawnee FFA chapter at this contest. The pair worked very well together, stayed calm, and followed their procedures throughout the entire contest. As a direct result, the team won first place in the district. This is an outstanding accomplishment for the team, because there are only first-year members in the chapter, and they were competing against students from joint vocational schools and career and technology centers where students work on these types of equipment all of the time. The team proceeded onto the state contest, which was held at the University of Northwest Ohio on March 11.
The Preble Shawnee FFA chapter and District Five would like to thank Steinke Tractor Sales for allowing the chapter the use of two pieces of machinery for the contest, and Derek Vonderhaar for coming to judge for the day. The chapter would also like to thank Twin Valley Equipment for allowing the use of two pieces of equipment, and Bill McQuiston and PJ Smith for judging. Thanks to Koenig Equipment of Oxford for allowing the use of a piece of equipment, Jason Rudnick for judging and bringing Eric White to talk to seniors about the Owens program for students interested in becoming technicians. Preble Shawnee would also like to thank Rodney Burger for serving as a judge.
Miami East FFA hosts annual parent-member banquet
CASSTOWN, Ohio — The Miami East FFA Chapter recently held its 52nd annual Parent Member Banquet. Over 260 parents, members, and guests were attendance at Miami East Junior High Auditorium. Highlights of the evening were:
In 2010, the chapter was ranked 12th out of 315 chapters in the National Chapter Application. Also, the chapter was Top Chapter in all the areas of Student Development and a Top 10 Chapter in the area of Community Development. In 2010, the Chapter was then sent on for national judging and we were named a 2-Star National Chapter at the National FFA Convention.
Three officers, Emily Johnson, Kaylee Schaefer, and Corrine Melvin submitted Officer Books for review at the District Evaluations. All three earned a gold rating. They will be further recognized at the 2011 State FFA Convention.
FFA members are given the opportunity to earn four degrees during their membership in the organization. The first is the Greenhand Degree represented by a bronze pin. Students were recognized that reached the second degree presented – the Chapter FFA Degree. 7 candidates met and exceeded the minimum qualifications for this degree. The candidates were Lindsay Brookhart, Morgan Jess, Emily Johnson, Sarah Pyers, Corrine Melvin, Jenifer Slone and Brady Schindel.
One of the premier goals of the FFA is to promote leadership among its students. The Miami East FFA Chapter would not be able to do special projects without some very special people. There were two individuals recognized with the Honorary Chapter FFA Degree – Mrs. Dolores Kramer and Mrs. Debbie Hunt.
Proficiency awards are designed to recognize the efforts of members who have outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experience programs and have keep accurate records. Winners of the 2011 Chapter Proficiency Awards were: Heather Skaggs, agricultural sales; Kyle Roeth, beef production; Amanda Bartel, diversified agricultural production and emerging agricultural technology; Kaylee Schaefer, floriculture; Dani Sands, poultry production; Emily Johnson, sheep production; Victoria Kinney, specialty animal production; and Rick Thimmes, vegetable production.
Quality Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) programs are based on accurate record keeping and perfected record books. Students with outstanding record books in each of the classes were: Agriscience 1 – Dan Bodenmiller, Agriscience 2 – Emily Johnson and Sarah Pyers, Agribusiness 1 – Amber Owen, and Agribusiness 2 – Kaylee Schaefer. |
