FFA Chapter Salute - West Washington FFA Chapter

Chapter Name: West Washington FFA
School Name: West Washington High School
City and State: Campbellsburg, Indiana
Advisor(s): Ms. Ophelia Davis
Phone Number: 812-755-4890
E-mail: daviso@wwcs.k12.in.us
Chapter Charter Date: 1964

History of Chapter: The West Washington (WW) School Corperation was started in 1963, and the WW FFA Chapter received their official charter shortly thereafter in 1964. The chapter originally had 45 members. Being surrounded by corn or soybeans in the fall the WW FFA gets to experience the real farming world. Most of the chapter members come from a farming background and know what it is like ‘to live and work on a farm or be engaged in other agricultural pursuits.’ Having over 80 FFA members the WW FFA Chapter is, as we say,
“Kind of a Big Deal.” The officer team this year consists of 10 people with our president, a senior, Whitley Fisher. Additional members of the officer team who work hard to make our chapter successful are: Seniors: Sterling Springer-1st Vice President, Hannah Gibson-Treasurer; Juniors: Ben Lengel-2nd Vice President, Dylan Nicholson-Secretary, Zach Trueblood-Sentinel, Lucas Gilbert-Historian, Jordan Knapp-Chaplain; Sophomores: Ashley Hoar-Reporter and Landis Guthrie-Student Advisor.

What contests does the chapter participate in? With so many members in the Chapter we get to compete in many of the FFA contests throughout the year. Livestock Judging, Soil Judging, Leadership contests and many others are very popular in the chapter. Last year the chapter went to state with the Novice Parliamentary Procedure Team, which was the first year for the WW FFA to have a novice team, Livestock Judging, Dairy Judging, Leadership Contests, and Horse Judging. So we had a busy time at State Convention and state contests.
What activities does the chapter participate in?: The West Washington FFA also does many activities with the rest of the school. The chapter hosts an annual Community Breakfast, in which the community can come out and eat breakfast and help out the chapter. At the breakfast, there is also a worker auction. The chapter members sell their services for 4 or 8 hours to work for someone. The Community Breakfast also has a regular auction in which we sell nice projects built by the agriculture students and construction classes. This year the community breakfast is scheduled to be held on Saturday April 9 at the West Washington High School cafeteria. We also have events during FFA Week too. FFA Week is a busy time for the chapter. Greenhand Day, the Chapter Banquet, Farm Day, the Elementary Coloring Contest, and more happen during the week. The chapter also has a fundraiser in which we sell fruit in the fall.

The chapter also attends the Farm Machinery Show and Tractor Pull, the North American Livestock Show and Rodeo. The West Washington FFA Chapter, with a lot of assistance from the WW Agriculture Advisory Board Members and Washington County Community Foundation, recently started the James L. Brown Scholarship Endowment, which awards and recognizes active and deserving members in the chapter wanting to pursue a career in agriculture.
The chapter also awards the West Washington FFA Scholarship again for deserving graduating members who may not be pursuing agriculture as a career.  The summer months are just as busy as during the school year as the chapter attends State Convention, participates in the annual Relay for Life event with our chapter’s team, offers the summer SAE course for members working on SAE projects and proficiencies, attends chapter awards trips-like going to Holiday World and officer retreat.

What else would you like to tell us?: So all in all, the West Washington FFA chapter has a busy year whether it is participating in contests, having school activities or planning for an upcoming event. The FFA chapter has opportunities for everyone and anyone is welcome to join and participate.

The chapter members work hard and put a lot of time, thought and effort into each and every event, contest and activity that the chapter takes on. However, the chapter members can’t take all the credit for many of the successes our chapter is so blessed with.

Without the support of many great parents, community members, school staff and administration our chapter wouldn’t be able to do all that we do each year. We are very fortunate to be a part of the community that surrounds our chapter and we would like to thank everyone who continues year after year to help our chapter in so many different ways!
