1971: Hoosier high-yield farmer produces near 210-bushel corn

It has been figured that it takes 48 minutes to plow an acre using a tractor, compared to 2.6 hours required when horses are used.

Mount Comfort High School’s poultry and egg judging team won first place in the annual 4-H and FFA competition in Hancock County. Winning team members were Joyce Jarrett, Ronald Sparks and Barbra Borgman, Ora Callahan is the team coach. Greenfield team placed second. (Note: Ora is one of Farm World’s recent former correspondents.)

Funk Bros. Seed Co, held its annual banquet honoring the following for outstanding yields. Certificates and trophies were presented to Paul Sparks, 165.3 bushels per acre; Charles Mellee, 166.9; Phillip Groves, 168.6; and Robert Dickey, 179. French Hamilton received the highest yield award, with 208.2 bushels per acre. He received a plaque plus a portable color television.

Triton Central FFA Chapter had students who recently placed in the District Contest held at Franklin High School. Those from Triton Central FFA were Rod Lawrence, first place in the Impromptu Speaking completion, and John Abston, placing third in the Sales Demonstration contest.

Jan Williams of Knightstown has been elected to serve as secretary of the National Pork Council Women for the coming year. She and her husband, Bill, run a 300-sow farrow-to-finish operation and market 5,500 head of hogs annually.

The Clinton Central FFA Livestock Judging Team won the Tri-High Invitational Livestock Judging Contest recently. The team was comprised of Todd Caldwell, Susan Shoup, Brent McKinney and Joe Rule.

Wholesale gasoline prices dropped 11.1 percent last month. Home heating oil costs declined sharply, by 26.2 percent.
