Gundersen to lead National Soybean Research Lab
URBANA, Ill. — Associate professor Craig Gundersen has been selected as the director of the National Soybean Research Laboratory (NSRL) at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, according to Robert Hauser, dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES).
Gundersen will provide leadership and strategic direction regarding soybean research, outreach and education efforts from production through consumption. His priorities will be to expand the scope and size of the soybean industry and the profitability of soybean farmers.

Prior to coming to the UoI Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, he was at the USDA Economic Research Service and Iowa State University. He received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California-Riverside in 1996 and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame in 1990.

Ft. Recovery FFA Alumni reactivates membership
FT. RECOVERY, Ohio — The Fort Recovery FFA Alumni attended the Ohio FFA Alumni Convention in Columbus, Ohio on Jan. 22, 2011. Six alumni members attended representing the Fort Recovery FFA Alumni for the first time. The meeting was attended by Dave and Lisa Timmerman, Frank and Becky Dues, and Don and Carol Knapke. The FFA Alumni Affiliates were formed to operate in support of the over 7,487 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Fort Recovery has had an FFA Alumni Affiliate for some time, but became inactive. In a brief membership drive that was sparked by Michael Gower and Joe Hawk, the Fort Recovery FFA Alumni is back. The community responded with great support and the 2011 membership will stand at 103 active members being submitted with just over half of these being submitted as lifetime members. In the first few months, the Fort Recovery alumni affiliate has already had a bus tour to Choretime Brock and Fair Oaks Dairy, an ice cream social featuring an address from the Ohio Director of Agriculture Jim Zehringer, and has several other activities planned for the spring.

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The mission of the National FFA Alumni Assoc. is to secure the promise of FFA and agricultural education by creating an environment where people and communities can develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success.

MSU students earn Dairy Memorial Scholarships
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Dairy Memorial and Scholarship Foundation Inc. oversees the largest scholarship program in Michigan State University’s (MSU’s) College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the second largest at the University. The foundation awarded more than $80,000 in dairy scholarships this year to 28 incoming and current MSU students.
The following Michigan residents earned $3,500 Michigan Dairy Memorial Scholarships: 

Senior Krista Beeker, animal science/environmental studies major from Constantine; Senior Melissa Brower, animal science major from Jamestown; Sophomore Lauren Bush, animal science major from Swartz Creek; Junior Stacey Choate, animal science major from Cement City; Senior Melissa Erdman, Production Animal Scholars from Minden City; Senior Cally Hass, animal science/agribusiness management from Cassopolis; Senior Jillian Holdwick, animal science major from Harbor Beach; Sophomore Tera Koebel, agribusiness management major from Three Oaks; Senior Jessica Makowski, animal science major from Macomb; Junior Kevin Messing, biosystems and agricultural engineering major from Bad Axe; Senior Elizabeth Motz, animal science/agribusiness management from St. Johns; Senior Lynnae Slavik, animal science major from Ashley; and Junior Eric Sneller, animal science major from Sebewaing.

The following five students, all Michigan residents majoring in dairy management in the Institute of Agricultural Technology, earned $2,000 Michigan Dairy Memorial Scholarships: Jamie Atherton, Gaines; Ashley Blight, Bancroft; Deidre Bowen, Cass City; Dale Dick, McBain; and Katie Szymanski, Snover.

First-year students awarded the Michigan Dairy Memorial Freshman Scholarships worth $1,500 include the following: Leah Cordona, food science major from Chicago, Ill.;Emily DeVooght, animal science major from Marquette, Mich.; Kaitlyn Eisenga, dairy management major from Marion, Mich.; Katelyn Horning, animal science major from Manchester, Mich. and Ned Lindsey, dairy management major from Tekonsha, Mich.
