Fourth graders to get free tickets to Ohio State Fair
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kids just out of the fourth grade will get in free to this year’s Ohio State Fair so they can learn about agriculture.

"Fair manager Virgil Strickler tells The Columbus Dispatch the program is meant to show children where their food comes from.

To receive the free one-day admission, a child will have to present a fourth-grade report card at the fair entrance. An accompanying adult also will get a free ticket.

Fair officials expect other, paying relatives will come along and that the families will spend on food and rides, so they say they’re not concerned about lost income at the ticket booth.

The fair also has announced more of this year’s concert lineup, including an appearance by pop music sensation Ke$ha.

Jay County FFA spell out FFA in school parking lot
PORTLAND, Ind. — Every year for FFA Week, the Jay County FFA has a flyover. Before school, members park their cars in the large back parking lot of the school. In the lot, they have assistance by an advisor to help spell out FFA with the cars. The president and vice-president of the FFA chapter go to Miller Aviation, the local airport, and from there a pilot takes them up on a plane. The pilot flies over the cars in the parking lot while the officers take pictures of the cars spelling out FFA. Albany- On April 2, 2011 the Alexander Livestock Evaluation Team competed at the state level. The team included; Jed Anderson, Frank Bail, Austin Crabtree, Caitlyn Mullins, Whitney Mullins. The Alexander Horse Judging Team also competed at the state level on the 2nd the members of the team were Kim Holcomb and Jessie Sinclair.

Ohio Soybean announces scholarship recipients
WORTHINGTON, Ohio — The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation is pleased to announce the scholarship recipients of the OSCF Scholarship Program for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Undergraduate scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded to Dustin Homan, Andrew Klopfenstein, Rhiannon Schneider and Brent Stammen. The first annual $3,000 Farmer, Lumpe + McClelland (FLM) Scholarship was awarded to Emily Krueger, and the annual $5,000 Bhima Vijayendran Scholarship was awarded to Rachel Yoho. Graduate scholarships of $5,000 were awarded to Sasiwimon Buddhiranon and Andika Gunadi.

This is the fourth year for the OSCF Scholarship Program, which was created to encourage undergraduate students to pursue careers in agriculture, as well as to support ongoing graduate-level research. All OSCF scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to full-time students enrolled at an Ohio college or university.

Dustin Homan of Botkins, Ohio, is majoring in agricultural education at The Ohio State University (OSU) and will be a senior in the fall of 2011.

Andrew Klopfenstein of Haviland, Ohio, is majoring in agricultural engineering at OSU and will be a senior in the fall of 2011.

Rhiannon Schneider of Grafton, Ohio, is majoring in crop sciences at OSU and will be a senior in the fall of 2011.

Brent Stammen of Rossburg, Ohio, is majoring in agricultural communications at OSU-ATI and will be a sophomore in the fall of 2011.

Emily Krueger of West Salem, Ohio, is majoring in agricultural communications at OSU and will be a senior in the fall of 2011.

Rachel Yoho of Sunbury, Ohio, is majoring in biology at Capital University and will be a senior in the fall of 2011.

Sasiwimon Buddhiranon of Akron, Ohio, is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Akron in polymer engineering with concentration in phase behavior and miscibility of polymers.

Andika Gunadi of Wooster, Ohio, is pursuing a Master of Science degree at OSU-OARDC in plant pathology.

“It was a pleasure to be a part of the scholarship selection committee and have the opportunity to meet such impressive students,” said David Black, Ohio Soybean Council board member and OSCF scholarship selection committee member. “We are very proud of the scholarship recipients who will undoubtedly contribute to a successful future for the Ohio soybean industry and Ohio agriculture.”

Mercer County FFA hosts judging invitational
CELINA, Ohio — The Mercer County FFA Chapters hosted the 5th snnual Mercer County Invitational on March 26 at 10 a.m. at the Mercer County Fairgrounds and Mack Arena with 549 students from 51 schools in attendance.

The Mercer County Invitational was a statewide judging contest that attracted students from a multi-county region in Ohio. Students competed in the following contests: agronomy judging, dairy cattle judging, dairy foods judging, equine judging, general livestock judging, nature interpretation, poultry judging, and wildlife judging. Coldwater-Tri Star FFA, Ft. Recovery FFA, Marion Local FFA, St. Henry FFA and Parkway FFA organized the event.

The Mercer County FFA Chapters would like to thank Steve Schulte, Mercer County Fairgrounds Manager, Jeff Selhorst, Mercer County Fair Board president; and Tom Knapke, Long Range Planning Committee president, for helping to organize the facilities for this event and to the numerous volunteers who helped coordinate the event. The following farmers brought in livestock for the event: Daryl Guggenbiller, Dan Dues, Jordan Hellwarth, Steve Knapke, Ron Pohl, Larry Schmitmeyer, Angie Schwieterman, Paul & Jim Kleinhenz, Jerry Meyer, Gary Muhlenkamp, and Kyle Uhlenhake. Craig Siefring is thanked for hauling the mulch for the event.

The Mercer County FFA Chapters would also like to say thanks to the personnel at the Mack Arena for their assistance and facility to conduct the Equine Judging Contest. The following brought in horses for the event: Jon Rollins, Bill Walls, Sandy Prichard, Jordan Griesdorn, Amy Frantz and Kerry Walls Family. A huge thanks to the personnel at the Mercer County Garage for the use of the wash bay and the Hopewell Grange for allowing their facilities to be used for the event. Don and Sally Siegrist are also thanked for their coordination of the food stand during the event.
