U.S. Secretary Benson has offered farmers from $24-$66 per acre to plow up wheat, cotton, corn and rice for the new soil bank bill that was signed last week by President Eisenhower.

A deluge of rains last week drenched east-central Indiana, causing temporary lakes in newly-planted fields, blocked highways and swelled streams to flood stage.

Friends and neighbors are helping area farmers who have been unable to do field work. A cornfield on the Roy G. McClain farm in Shelby County is disked and planted, while the farmer is improving after his operation.
A 117-acre field was cultivated and planted for Clarence Mohr in Shelby County, who is in the hospital, and neighbors helped on a 81-acre corn and soybean field for James Moster of Rush County, after the death of a loved one.
A 171-pound calf was born on the farm operated by Bob Addington of Winchester, with Dr. R.W. Welburn delivering the male calf from a Guernsey cow.

A herd of 225 hogs were depopulated in Chester Township of Wabash County, Ind., because of an outbreak of hog cholera reported by the Indiana State Board of Animal Health this week.

Agriculture Research Service scientists are experimenting with a chemical called (CPA) cyclophosphamide that lets workers de-fleece sheep merely by rolling their wrists along the skin.

A fire killed 30 horses and destroyed a horse barn at the Mercer County, Ohio, Fairgrounds. The fire was believed to have been caused by faulty electrical wiring. Most of the horses were Standardbreds, and between three and five were racing horses.

The Green County Soil and Water Conservation District held a Field Day recently where it toured the hog and farm operation of Egnew Farms, north of Linton, Ind., and a 38,000-turkey farm operation located northwest of Linton, owned by Tom Walton.

Five Illinois communities remain in the running for a state-of-the-art pork processing plant and its 210 jobs. American Premium Foods, Inc. announced last week that Clinton, Eureka, Gridley, Pontiac and Rantoul have risen to the top after an 18-month search that began with 20 towns.

A 384-acre farm belonging to Kentucky Gov. Wallace G. Wilkinson was sold for $952,665, which included a 5.5 percent buyer’s premium. The farm was sold to local developers.

According to the U.S. Energy Department, the retail gasoline price increased to its highest level on record in the United States during May. The national average price of gasoline is more than $1.70 per gallon; the previous record was set last June at $1.68.
