40 years ago President Richard M. Nixon and Secretary of Agriculture Clifford Hardin visited Indiana recently. The schedule included briefings and aerial watch on the corn blight areas in Indiana, dedication ceremonies in Jennings County honoring the president’s late mother’s birthplace and a retirement dinner honoring old friend Dr. Frederick L. Hovde, retiring president of Purdue University.
A dairy barn owned by Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Kolb of R. 9, Indianapolis, was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Lost in the blaze were feed, hay, dairy equipment, a truck and tractor.

Carroll and Clinton counties continue to lead the state of Indiana in number of hogs and pigs. Elkhart is the top county in cattle and calves, in milk cows and in milk production. Dubois leads the way in hens and pullets of laying age.
10 years ago Hot, sunny days and some shots of rain have helped improve crop conditions across Kentucky, a crop reporting service said. Fifty-six percent of the corn crop was rated in good condition and 28 percent was rated excellent. Sixty-one percent of the soybean crop is in good condition as well. Most of the other soybean crop was in either fair or excellent shape.
Lyle Hoffmaster of Bucyrus, Ohio, attends several steam engine shows throughout the Midwest, taking his Reeves Steam Engines with him, accompanied by his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Don Atzinger of Bargersville, Ind., and their children, Joy and Carl. The Reeves Steam Engine was manufactured in Columbus, Ind.
