Five confirmed cases of rabies have been reported since the first of the year in Indiana. Cases involved were four skunks and one fox.

Ruth Wimer, Madison County’s first home demonstration agent, has retired. Prior to serving in Madison County, Wimer was a home economics teacher at Frankton High School and extension agent in Tipton County.

Indiana’s farms provide 23.1 percent of Indiana’s real property assessment and the percentage of farm personal property assessment is 6.9 percent, according to the County Government Statistical Report.

Rick Nagel of Rensselaer, Ind., has been named a counselor for the Future Farmers of America’s Washington Conference Program. Nagel has served as the Indiana state FFA president.

Currently he is a junior at Purdue University majoring in agricultural education and animal science, and is active in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and student government.

Joseph and Mary Phillips of the Morristown, Ind., area will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary; both are 95 years old. They have 11 children, 23 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, and nine of their 11 children are still living. They live on a farm where they have raised produce for sale at their stand on state highways 9 and 52. Mary provided extra income to the family by working at the Kopper Kettle and Bradley Barbecue restaurants.
