Templeton named deputy commissioner for agriculture
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Department of Agriculture Commissioner Julius Johnson announced the appointment of McNairy County mayor and lifelong farmer Jai Templeton as the agency’s deputy commissioner. Templeton joined the department June 1.
He succeeded retiring Deputy Commissioner Terry Oliver. As deputy commissioner, Templeton oversees day-to-day operations of the department, helping direct programs and services ranging from food safety, animal and plant health, pesticides and consumer protection to forestry and agricultural development.
Templeton served as mayor of McNairy County since 2006. He is a former county commissioner and former president of the McNairy County Chamber of Commerce. From 1994-2003, he served as a field representative for former U.S. Rep. Ed Bryant.
He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Union University in Jackson, Tenn., and is a graduate of Weststar, Leadership McNairy County and AgStar professional development programs. He is also a sixth-generation farmer producing grain, cotton, hay, timber and cattle.
Soybean growers: Enter 2012 Conservation Legacy contest
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Conservation Legacy Awards program, sponsored by the American Soybean Assoc. (ASA), BASF, Monsanto, the United Soybean Board and Corn & Soybean Digest, is looking for soybean farmers who should be recognized for their outstanding environmental and conservation practices. It is open to all U.S. soybean growers.
There will be three regional winners, who together with a spouse or guest will receive an expense-paid trip for two to Commodity Classic in Nashville, Tenn., March 1-3, 2012. Regional winners will be recognized at the ASA Banquet, where a national winner will be announced from among the three regional winners. State honors 2010 Walking Horse World Grand Champion
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — State Agriculture Commissioner Julius Johnson recently honored 2010 Tennessee Walking Horse World Grand Champion owners Robert Kilgore of Tuscaloosa and Neal Holland Jr. of Decatur, Ala., and Joe Barnes of Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Also honored was trainer Billy Gray of Shelbyville, Tenn.
Marty Irby, president of the Tennessee Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Assoc., presented the official portrait of World Grand Champion The Coach to Johnson. The portrait, by photographer Jack Greene, will be on display in the Moss Administration Building at Ellington Agricultural Center. The 73rd annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration is slated for Aug. 24-Sept. 3.
Five newly elected to NIAA’s board of directors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Members of the National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) elected five members to their first three-year terms on its board of directors and reelected three others to their second terms.
Newly-elected were Linda Campbell, American Dairy Goat Assoc.; Colin Forster, Y-TEX Corp.; Dr. Karen Jordan, Dairy Farmers of America; Erika Rachal, Alltech, Inc.; and John Saunders, IMI Global. Reelected were Dr. Tony Forshey, Ohio Department of Agriculture; Stan Mannschreck, National Livestock Producers Assoc.; and Dr. David Meeker, National Renderer Assoc. |
