CLINTON COUNTY, Ohio — Come to the Amazing Barn Quilt Race on Sept. 3 to look for a totally new kind of challenge. Imagine “Survivor,” “Amazing Race” and Clinton County quilt barns all rolled into one.

Teams of two will visit 8-10 farms that have barns with quilt blocks on them and there will be a different challenge at each location, said Diane Murphy, one of the organizers. The challenges – sometimes performed by both team members, sometimes just one – will be timed. Rest easy; only the challenges will be timed, not the travel time between barns.

Fun is the most important part of the day so the challenges will not be hazardous or too difficult, Murphy said. They will involve activities like pitching horseshoes, tossing corn hole and one is a puzzle – putting quilt block designs together.

The race is designed to show off the county’s quilt barn trail, begun last year to celebrate its bicentennial; 30 states now have quilt barn projects. The Clinton County project has 54 quilt blocks spread throughout the county.
Design and colors for the quilt block were chosen by the barn owners. The John Stanforth Construction Co. volunteered its time to put up the blocks and other volunteers painted them.

Anyone 18 and over who is looking a new way to celebrate the Labor Day weekend should sign up for the race, but preregistration is required. Entry fee is $50 per team. First prize is $300, second is $150 and third is $75.
