DECATUR, Ind. — Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 17 – and continuing throughout Sunday, Aug. 28 – the typically quiet Hoosier town of Decatur (pop. 9,528) will pop with excitement.
For antique aficionados, that translates into garage sales, horse drawn historical wagon tours, deals at local antiques shops and more, all culminated by the Downtown Antique Show on historic 2nd Street.
The festivities – coinciding with the annual Kekionga Festival – are being staged to commemorate the town’s 175 birthday. Located on Old U.S. 27, just south of Fort Wayne, Decatur was founded in 1836 by Samuel L. Rugg. The town retains much of its original downtown, with a magnificent Victorian courthouse, built in 1873. Also downtown, is the Adams County Historical Society – which has been planning for the 175th anniversary of the town all year – located in a beautiful old home once built by a prominent local family. The antique show, scheduled for Aug. 28 from 1-3 p.m has more than 30 vendors already signed up. But, there’s room for more, Yvonne Marie Gilbert said. “We have spaces all down the street here that’s available,” she said. During the 11-day event, Gilbert will be hosting her own celebration at Yvonne Marie’s Antique Mall marking her 22nd anniversary on 2nd street. Back in 1989, Yvonne and her late husband, Sam, patiently waited for the “perfect location” for her antique shop.
“When the perfect building became available we just couldn’t pass it up,” Gilbert said.
“We bought the building in June and spent the next few weeks driving around and passing out flyers at antique shows. The response was terrific!” Today, Gilbert is in the store nearly every day. Her daughter and granddaughters also help out.
“It is just enjoyable to see all the friendly people that come into the store every day,” she says. “Times have really changed since we opened for business, but we are ready for the next generation of antique lovers.” For more details, call 260-724-2001. |
