At the Shelby County Fair the top 4-H showmen were Larry Linville, swine showman with his Poland China and Lowell Armstrong, beef showman with his Angus. In the 4-H dual purpose show, Janet Stiles won for the beginning 4-H member with the best showmanship rating. Peter DeWitt won in 4-H dairy judging. Duane Cates of Green Township had the top-priced steer at the Wayne County 4-H Beef and Barrow Auction. His 1,032-pound Shorthorn was purchased by a Richmond restaurant owner. Paul Fisher of Dalton Township had the lightweight Berkshire Grand Champion barrow.
Among the speakers at the upcoming third National Broiler Convention in Indianapolis will be Harold Handley, commissioner of agriculture; M.G. Whitehead, Goshen, president of the Indiana State Poultry Assoc.; and Dr. J. Holmes Martin, head of Poultry-Sciences Department, Purdue University.

40 years ago Mike Waymire was chosen Champion Senior Beef Showman at the recent Madison County 4-H Fair in Alexandria. Mark Sigler was selected as the Champion Junior Beef Showman. The Grand Champion steer was shown by Lisa Swisher.

Two young brothers, Ronnie and David Netherton of Tipton, were working a cornfield when a storm came up and before they could leave the field, they were struck by lightening. Their young lives were saved due to the heroic efforts of Ron Jerome and Randy Hunter, who administered lifesaving procedures on them. Both boys were transferred to hospitals and since, have been released to their homes.
25 years ago Miss Jay County, Tina Marie Schwieterman, was crowned the new Miss Indiana State Fair Queen for this year’s fair. She was selected from 84 other contestants and is a recent graduate of Portland, Ind., high school. She plans to attend Ball State University in the fall.
Grand Champion wether at the Clinton County 4-H fair at Frankfort, Ind., this year was shown by JoAnn Brock of Kirklin. Judging the sheep show was Stanley Poe of Franklin. Ten Lincoln County, Mo., 4-Hers were recently hosted in Parke County for one week as part of an interstate 4-H exchange program. Next year, Parke County will visit Lincoln County in Missouri.

10 years ago Indiana farmers harvested the fewest acres of wheat in state history this summer.
Total estimated production for Indiana is 25 million bushes, with a yield of about 66 bushels an acre, according to Chris Hurt, a Purdue agricultural economist.
