Choice grade cattle jumped to a 16-month high of $27.25 in Chicago. September prices are expected to be higher.

Wheat was bringing $2.17; the price is 13 cents under support level, so farmers are putting more of their wheat under loan.

Three area 4-H members have been named for a trip to Washington, D.C., on an achievement trip: Joe Caldwell of Fayette County and Lora Mae Reeves and Kenneth Masters of Henry County. Selections are made on leadership and achievement records.

S.G. Roberts, Indianapolis branch manager for the J.I. Case Co., says the company predicts field shellers and corn combines will replace the majority of corn pickers now used on Indiana farms, within the next five years.

The USDA estimates the 1971 corn crop in Indiana at 556,409,000 bushels, a yield of 101 bushels an acre. The soybean prospect was set at 111,441,000 bushels, at 33 an acre.

Brian Bray of Mays, Ind., won first place in the female Polled Hereford class at the recent district Gold Medal Cattle Show held at Rushville, Ind. Brian’s projects in 4-H are beef cattle and hogs.

Twin foals, a colt and a filly Hackney, were born near Mooreland, Ind. A rarity, since only one set of twins in 400 lives. The twins seem to be doing fine.

Brother and sister duo take top honors at Indiana State Fair. John Wilcox had Grand Champion Steer and April Wilcox had the Reserve Champion Steer; both are from rural Bedford, Ind. This is a first at the Indiana State Fair, that a brother and sister have taken top honors the same year and in the same competition.

The Indiana apple crop is expected to be down 59 percent from last year due to the widespread freeze damage in April.

National Sheep Dog Finals set for the Ohio Farm Science Review Show in September, at London, Ohio. At least 50 dogs will qualify for the championship run, according to Lewis Pulfer Jr. of Quincy, Ohio.

The largest ewe sale east of the Mississippi River will attract sheep fanciers from various states to the Labor Day event at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Franklin, Ind., said Will Schakel, Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. A total of 461 head will be available at the sale.

Rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets no longer need to be an annual chore thanks to a vote by the Indiana Board of Animal Health. The board amended the rule to expand the mandatory vaccination period from 1-3 years, said State Veterinarian Bret Marsh.
The August USDA crop production rep
ort was released by Ralph Gann, Indiana state statistician and Chris Hurt, Purdue University agricultural economist. The state is looking at an average yield of 147 bushels an acre for corn and 46 bushels per acre on soybeans.

A year ago, a tornado ruined most of the buildings at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Xenia, Ohio. New structures dot the fairgrounds. This year’s fair which is the longest-running fair west of the Allegheny Mountains.
