1986: Farm Progress Show halts field demos for flooding

130 Hampshire boars and gilts bred by Donald Gray of near Mays, Ind., sold at the Gray Farm sale for a total of $12,600, with a large crowd present. Edward Lass paid top gilt price of $440 and Ken Whitington & Son of Ansonia, Ohio, paid $350 for the top boar.
Public auction: three good young Guernsey cows, giving good flow of milk; 1- to 3-month-old Guernsey heifer calf; three dozen White Leghorn pullets; 150 bushels of corn; 300 bales of good clover hay; 1-14 Farmall tractor and cultivators; 12-inch Little Genius breaking plow; John Deere corn planter; eight-disc grain drill; I.H.C. milker; 6- to 8-gallon milk cans; miscellaneous farm tools, equipment and household goods – Mr. & Mrs. Payton (Pate) Fugua of Eden, Ind.; J.C. Bradley and Joe Kellum, Auctioneers.

Alton Elliott, Henry County farmer, has purchased the Myers Implement Co. on State Route 3 near New Castle. Mark Myers, who has owned the business since 1938, will move the appliance line of the firm to a new location.

Farm for sale: 102 acres, six-room house, large barn, one good woods, good fences, timber fruit, spring and well water, $6,500 – Roy Crawley, Connersville, Ind.

Indiana Duroc Breeders have chosen the fairgrounds at Tipton as the place for their annual fall sale of boars and gilts. Alan Butts, a Duroc breeder from Evansville, Wis., will judge the pre-sale show. Gene Paul of Tipton, president of the association, has appointed Robert Bennett of Linden, Bernard Parr of Tipton and Stanley Rush of Greentown as the Sale Committee. Howard Parrish of Edon, Ohio, will call the bids and Paul Parrish of Montpelier will represent the Duroc News and Registry.

A barn belonging to J.R. Brown in Jackson Township, Rush County, was destroyed. Estimate on the fire was $8,000-$10,000, but the cause of fire is undetermined. No livestock was lost, but hay and straw, milking equipment and miscellaneous equipment were lost.
Winners have been announced for the Farmer’s Day exhibits at the Union County Sesquicentennial celebration: Donal Klein, largest pumpkin; Robert Waelde, longest ear of corn; Mrs. Norman Krammes, largest head of cabbage; Howard Hormell, best 10 ears of corn; Mrs. Faye Gilmore, largest Irish potato; Mrs. James Remley, largest turnip; Glen Klein, most unusual gourds; Douglas Harvey, oats; and Jay Ewing, wheat.

On display, new 1972 Dodges at Goodwins, Inc. of Knightstown, Ind. – Dart Swinger two-door H.T., Challenger two-door H.T.; Charger SE, two-door H.T.; Polara four-door H.T.; Coronet four-door; and Monaco two-door H.T.

Because of the torrential rains and damaging winds, the annual Farm Progress Show in Iowa postponed its Wednesday showing. Rain-soaked fields are preventing any field demonstrations from being held at the show this year.

A trade delegation from Taiwan visiting Indiana last week agreed to purchase $16.1 million worth of corn and soybeans.
Indiana Pork Producers hosted special events at two Indiana football games. IU Pork Day was held before the Indiana University vs. Navy football game, and Indiana State University Pork Day was held before the ISU-Southern Missouri State game. Both events were deemed a “huge” success.

Stoney Pike Livestock Auction, Logansport, Ind. – choice steers, $68-$70; choice heifers, $68-$70; Holsteins, $56-63; feeder cattle, yearling steers and heifers, $63-$82; steer and heifers. Calves, $85-$104; veal calves, $80-$110; and butcher bulls, $46-$55.
Ted Dixon and his son, Joel, run 140 head of bison on 245 acres in southeastern Ohio. Dixon’s Elk Run Buffalo Farm is about two miles east of Beverly. The family direct-markets bison meat for $3.50 per pound that is usually sold by the quarter. His wife also owns and operates Darietta Restaurant in Beverly, which features buffalo meat on the menu.

Farmers get more milk from contented cows; Doug and Leslie Rhoades of Greenville, Ohio, built a new barn for their Brown Swiss dairy herd and installed water beds for the cattle to stand on. These are rubber mattresses with a water cell that holds about 15 gallons of water.
