Vandalism and gasoline thefts were reported in Shelby County at local farms. Robert Meltzer, Bice Williams, Roy Stockline and Vernon Bull have reported tires, wheels, tools and gas stolen from farms, outbuildings and trucks.

A century-old Colt cap-and-ball revolver was unearthed near Boggstown by Chester Wooldridge on his grandmother’s farm, while walking in the woods. The brass-handled gun is similar to guns used during the Civil War.

Rush-Henry County Stockyards reported the theft of 27 hogs with an estimated value of $1,793 from the stockyards. Manager of the stockyard is James Ringer of Mooresville; it is located 11 miles north of Rushville on Indiana State Road 3.

Dave and Bill White of near Morristown are using a 16-row Oliver planter this year for their crops. They can plant approximately 150 acres a day with the planter. There are only four known planters of this size in the state – two in northern Indiana, one in Shelby County and one in Rush County.

Nine Madison County 4-H members have been selected to attend the Citizenship Short course in Washington, D.C., this summer. Most of the Midwest is 50 percent below normal rainfall for this time of year, growing concerns for farmers on planted crops’ germination and plants that are up showing wilting due to lack of moisture.

One hundred forty-nine certified bulls sold at an average of $1,411, grossing $210,000 at the 18th Ohio Performance Tested Bull Sale held at Belle Valley. The top-selling bull was an Angus at $3,400, consigned by Carol Murphy of Upper Sandusky and bought by Ben Abicht and Forest City Simmentals of Eureka, W.Va.

Three Ohio State University fields get organic certification, a milestone placing the university in select company. The fields, near the Wooster campus of OSU’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, comprise about 14 acres.

An Illinois FFA chapter is working hard at restoring 1951 Farmall tractor. A group of Cumberland High School FFA members are restoring the tractor that was purchased by the chapter for $450, which they hope to restore and enter in the tractor restoration contest held in Louisville, Ky., sponsored by Chevron Lubricant.
