Energy from the sun is being harnessed to operate an electronic fence charger by Purdue University agricultural engineer G. W. Isaacs. Silicon solar cells, located in a frame on top of a conventional fence charger, collect radiant energy from the sun and convert it directly into electrical energy.

The best soybean prices since 1948 have prompted Indiana wheat and barley producers to take a new look at double-cropping as a means of increasing soybean acreage without reducing acreage of other crops.

Members of the Hagerstown Hot Ten 4-H Club arrived home this week from Drums, Pa., after what was to be a five-day stay. The group was delayed arriving home because of the flooded conditions in Eastern states and the closing of roads in the area. A group of Johnson County 4-Hers were also in Pennsylvania in Susquehanna County during the flooding and were reported as arriving back home safely, but delayed.

Lt. Gov. John Mutz recently said the state will fight the proposed Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Indiana, until the federal government proves “there would be no threat to Indiana’s thriving poultry industry and the jobs of thousands of Hoosiers who are employed in that industry in southwestern Indiana.”

Corn detasseling, a necessary operation to produce hybrid seed corn, is expected to start within a few days, said Alan Durham, plant manager of the corn conditioning plant for Pioneer in Tipton. Depending on the number of acres grown, each location or area will employ 1,000-3,000 workers through the month of July.

According to the National FFA Organization, 73 percent of the almost 500,000 FFA members nationwide live in rural, non-farm (39 percent) or suburban (34 percent) areas. Only 27 percent of FFA members live in rural, farm areas.

The 150th Mercer County Fair in Celina, Ohio, will be boasting the addition of two new twin multipurpose buildings that will house swine and sheep during the fair and will be available for general use throughout the rest of the year. The buildings are 60-by-168-feet each and a show arena is planned between the two buildings in the near future.
