1987: Chinese visitors sign deal for $39 million in crops

The Farm Management Tour will be visiting the 405-acre farm of Earl F. Miller west of Marion, Ind. Mr. Miller maintains an efficient farrowing and finishing hog operation and beef cattle and dairy enterprises, combined with an economical grain handling operation.
Also on the tour is the 700-acre farm of Guy Wilson and son near Kokomo. The Wilson farm features large-scale cattle feeding and hog enterprises. The operation is highly mechanized with many labor-saving practices.

The Spiceland FFA chapter has constructed a new fence on the FFA farm. The fence took two days to build and the following boys participated: James Gardner, Bill Gardner, Ray Wright, Gene VanOsdol, Stan Shell, Dallas Thompson, Marshall Noel, Tom Wilson, Rex Wright, Danny Ellis and Dan Swinford.

Dr. L.K. LeMay announces the recent purchase of Dr. R.S. Wann’s veterinary practice in Cambridge City. Dr. LeMay is conducting a large-animal farm service and a small-animal practice. He is a 1966 graduate of Purdue University and has been practicing in Hermann, Mo. for the past 5.5 years. He and his wife, Nancy, both natives of Knightstown, are now living in Dublin with their two children.
Illinois eliminates property tax on farm equipment, livestock, grain and the like by measures pushed by Gov. Richard Ogilvie and his Republican running mate for lieutenant governor, State Rep. James Nowlan. The measures were expected to be signed into law this week.

A Purdue University freshman majoring in agricultural communications was selected to reign for one year as the Indiana Future Farmers of America Sweetheart. Sherry Legg of Waynetown, representing the North Montgomery FFA Chapter, was crowned the new queen by state FFA President Scott Stump of LaGrange.
A Nationalist Chinese trade delegation agreed to spend $39 million for 312,000 metric tons of Kentucky corn and soybeans, during a contract-signing in Frankfort. This consists of 213 metric tons of corn and 99,000 metric tons of beans.

Illinois growers are battling a heavy corn borer flight. Reports in several counties throughout the state have warned of heavy captures of first-generation southwestern and European corn borer. In the southern Illinois counties of Massac and Pulaski, the corn borers are the largest on record since starting records back in 1996.
