Central Indiana dairy farmers are planning on a milk strike this month. All dairy farmers are being urged to withhold their milk beginning with the morning pickup. The vote to strike was 5-1, taken with a postcard poll of members of the Dairy Producers, Inc.

Four fires damaged homes and other buildings in Rush County. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Shafer of New Salem community was two-thirds destroyed. A barn was lost on the Kenneth Jones farm in Gings, along with a corn-picker and tractor destroyed.

A granary-toolshed on the Elmer Linville farm in Richland Township was destroyed, along with 1,000 bushels of oats, a corn drill, a tractor and stalk chopper. The home of Orris Magee southeast of New Salem had minimal damage, and most of it was saved.

Two more cholera outbreaks double-quarantine area – state and federal officials confirmed a new case involving the largest number of animals in a single herd so far, in Carroll County. The herd consists of 2,400 market hogs near Camden. A second case was confirmed within a 24-hour period in a group numbering 1,000 feeder pigs in Jackson Township.

An Angus cow, owned by Marshall Shively of Frankton, was killed and a car driven by Earl White of Elwood was totaled after the two met on Indiana Route 128. White was traveling west when he came over a hill and saw two cows in the road; he missed one, but couldn’t avoid the other cow.

West Nile virus (WNV) equine infections have increased 500 percent in the state of Tennessee in the last three weeks. There have been 42 confirmed animals this year, compared to one case in 2001.
