Studies have shed some light on cud-chewing by cows. It seems the cow uses the day and early evening to eat all she can, while most cud-chewing is done between 11 p.m.-6 a.m. Special sensors attached to the jaws of test cattle indicated a range of from 5-7 hours, and no more than 8-9, of cud-chewing for a 24-hour period.

The Bryant team won top national honors in the poultry judging contest during the Eastern U.S. 4-H and FFA Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Evaluation and judging contest, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. Team members were Dave Reinhart, Randy Castler, Dave Wellman and Dan Hilgeford. The team was coached by Wayne Haffner, Bryant principal. Team members practiced at the large-scale poultry business of Louis Schoenlein in Wabash Township.

A 50 metric ton (equal to 2,300 bushels) shipment of soymeal left the state last week bound for a feeding trial in Odessa, in the Ukraine region of the Soviet Union. Indiana is the only state supplying the meal.

Former Elanco international marketing employee Loren Schmierer of Noblesville, Ind., returned to his love of farming by opening up an 18 acre U-pick pumpkin farm that yields approximately 60,000 pumpkins each year for schoolchildren and families to pick.

Along with the pumpkins, the Schmierer family host: day camps for youngsters, companies to rent the farm for picnics, Civil War reenactments in October and hayrides, and raise farm animals and Christmas trees.

More than 1,000 chickens suffocated when ventilation fans in a poultry house were shut off, making it the third mass killing at western Kentucky poultry farms in recent weeks. The chickens were about 45 days old and were being raised for Tyson Foods.
