A Wayne County man is serving time in the Dayton, Ohio, workhouse for selling a homemade hog “flu” remedy to Ohio farmers. The man gave his address as Richmond and Cambridge City when arrested, and was picked up three times within a week and sent to the workhouse when he couldn’t pay the $500 fine. The remedy had not been registered with the Ohio Department of Agriculture and was improperly labeled.

Gov. Edgar Whitcomb and Sen. Birch Bayh are both seeking aid for Indiana farmers due to the extremely wet fall they have had this year. Hoosier farmers have lost $200 million in corn and soybeans because of an unusually wet fall. Only about 45 percent of the corn crop has been harvested thus far.

The grand opening of the Joliet-Chicago hog Market was held recently. The new center is owned exclusively by farmer feeders, and provides an open treaty market essential to competitive market prices through the forces of supply and demand. The facilities are capable of handling 6,500 hogs and 4,500 beef cattle daily.

Prices at the Indianapolis Union Stock Yards were the highest since operations started 96 years ago. A top of $31.50 a cwt. for 200- to 230-pound barrows and gilts was paid.

Fire caused more than $100,000 in damages to the Bausback Division of Darling Co., a processor of animal byproducts in Shelby County, Ind. No employees were in the building at the time of the fire, and the origin of fire is unknown at this time but the plant was expected to be closed for a couple of days.

A Duroc boar owned by Jack Rodibaugh and Sons of Rensselaer, Ind., was named Champion of the 1987 National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn., recently. The boar sold at auction for $11,900.

Illinois’ first farmer-owned ethanol plant is now producing the corn-based fuel additive in northern Illinois, and a second is on track to open downstate in early 2004. The state is the nation’s largest ethanol producer, but plants were all corporate-owned until Adkins Energy Cooperative opened its plant recently near Lena, about 35 miles west of Rockford.

Kramer & Kramer, Inc. of Eaton, Ohio, completed a successful auction with 245 registered bidders, for the Mrs. Omer Deaton, West Alexandria, Ohio, farm sale. Two pieces of equipment that went for premium prices were a 1976 JD 4230 tractor for $11,000, and a 1977 Gleaner M2 combine with grain head for $1,600.
