Farmers Elevator of Oakville held groundbreaking ceremonies for its new liquid mixed fertilizer plant recently. Lelan Ogle, Lincoln Bower, H.L. Nottongham, Paul Hinshaw, Davie Siewert, H. Reid Bowers and Rhoton Cross were all present for the ceremonies. The facility will have 13 storage tanks with a total capacity of 113,000 gallons.

The annual meeting of the Rush County Hereford Cattle Breeders Assoc. was at Wilhelm’s Café, with the following officers elected to serve for the coming year: Worth Hodson, president; Duane Newhouse, vice president; and John Nelson, secretary-treasurer. C.L. Spuller, county agent, discussed Gold Medal Calf Club work.

Purdue Winter Short Course was down this year, with 92 students enrolled. Fifty-two students enrolled in general agriculture and 40, in animal agriculture, including four out-of-state students, two from Ohio, one from Illinois and one from Michigan. No women are enrolled this year, and the average age ranges from 18-30.
The Emporia Elevator loaded its third train of 100 cars with corn recently, bound for Eastern states and overseas points. The current shipment of 356,000 bushels is valued at $42,500. The elevator is family owned by brothers, Edwin O. and Elmer Pasko.

Two sons of Edwin, Rex and Raymond, operate the Willow Branch elevator. They are the third generation in the business, with their grandfather, George Pasko, running a grain elevator in Huntington for many years.

Tobacco market ends with $78.35 average per cwt., compared to last year’s $81.07. More than 9 million pounds of tobacco were sold in the three warehouses at Madison this season. compared to 7.6 million pounds last year.

Case International is pulling hard for its new “Magnum” 7100 Series tractors at this year’s National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky. The new-look machines boast turbo-charged computer-aided diesel engines, which the company says means longer and cooler operation at maximum horsepower and greater efficiency.
The National Pork Producers Council is asking producers to suspend the use of the drug sulfa-methazine in all its forms for 60 days. The drug is used in some livestock feeds for the primary purpose of treating respiratory ailments.

Indiana State Sen. Bob Jackman (R-Milroy) introduced a bill last week into the state’s General Assembly that would effectively eliminate Indiana’s authority to regulate large confined feeding operations that require federal permits.
