EAST LANSING, Mich. — All roads will lead to East Lansing when dairy cattle owners take over the Michigan State University Pavilion on campus for the Great Lakes Spring Show, slated for March 22-23.

Holstein and Jersey breeders will bring their best as they kick off the spring show season with this annual event.

That Friday at 6 p.m., the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club will conduct its show as exhibitors parade Jerseys through the ring for John Erbsen of Lanark, Ill., to evaluate.

On Saturday morning, Erbsen will go back to work and evaluate the Great Lakes Spring Holstein show, as the best from the Midwest compete. The morning will begin with showmanship at 8:30 and follow with heifer and cow classes.

Entry forms for both the Jersey and the Holstein shows can be found at www.michiganholstein.com and entries are due March 16; late entries close at 4 p.m. March 22.

A cow show isn’t all that will be happening at the MSU pavilion. Holstein enthusiasts will have the opportunity at a great offering of registered Holsteins on March 22 at 11 a.m., when the Michigan Holstein Assoc. (MHA) Spring Foundation Sale begins, to be immediately followed by the Michigan State University Spartan Spectacular.

The Spring Foundation sale will include animals of all ages, from young stock to fresh cows, while the Spartan Spectacular managed by the MSU Dairy Club will feature fancy show calves. All the 2013 state sale animals are eligible to be shown in the show. There is no entry fee for state sale animals. If you purchase cattle from the Spring Foundation Sale or Spartan Spectacular and want to exhibit in the show, you must enter your animal by or at the conclusion of the sale on March 22.

That Saturday the Michigan Jersey Cattle Club will hold its spring sale and will feature registered Jerseys, with the sale beginning at noon. For more information on the MJCC show or sale, contact Susie Green at 989-862-5507.

In addition to the shows and sale, an interactive Calf Clinic will be held March 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the pavilion. Dr. Max Thornsberry of Milk Specialties Corp. will be conducting an educational session on successful calf health, management and care, calf feeds and feeding programs and “Necropsy: Determining the Causes and Planning for Success.”
