Estate planning workshop nixed; low registration

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A two-day seminar on estate planning and farm succession has been cancelled by Purdue University’s extension office in Allen County. The sessions were to be March 21 and 28.

The program, “Cultivating Strong Indiana Farm Family Relationships,” may be rescheduled for November or December, said Edward Farris, extension educator for agriculture and natural resources in Huntington County. Farris was to serve as a host educator for the Allen County program.

Organizers had hoped 8-10 families would participate, but only three registered, Farris said last week.

“We really don’t know why more weren’t interested,” he said. “It seemed like a good time of the year. Sometimes it’s hard to get people to open up about their family businesses.”
Over the two-day sessions, attendees would have heard presentations on financial skills, communicating for success and business structure and taxes.

The Allen County program was the last of several offered throughout the state since January. Farris said he didn’t know if any others had been cancelled.
