Burnips Equipment going into fifth decade serving Michigan
By MELISSA HART
Michigan Correspondent

HUDSON, Mich. — Dedicated to the agriculture community since 1972, Burnips Equipment Co. continues to grow and support its customer base knowing if their customers don’t succeed, neither will they.

Now in business for 41 years, the newest store is just one year old and situated in the heart of farming country on the Hillsdale-Lenawee county line in Hudson, Mich. Samantha Poling, manager at the new store, commented, “Our first year here has been great and we just keep expanding our inventory.”

The Hudson location is the largest of the four Burnips Equipment stores, also located in Dorr, Big Rapids and Coopersville. With a large building the owners have the opportunity to expand product lines.

Not only do they deal in New Holland, Mahindra, Claas and Kuhn Knight lines of farm equipment, the store carries clothing, showing and grooming supplies for livestock owners, bagged feed for horses and chickens and even a line of show feeds for livestock exhibitors.
Stocking a wide selection of products Burnips began carrying everything from Carhartt work wear and Redwing boots to livestock feeds and watering cans, with a desire to be the local farm store and more for its customers. After listening to those customers it has now expanded into other areas.

“We have brought in camping supplies, hunting supplies and a larger variety of our Redwing boot line and Muck Boot line,” said Poling. “The hunting line went over really well last year during the height of deer hunting season.

“We also have a larger selection of animal feeds, the animal health section is larger and we continue to expand into new areas at our customers’ request. We are listening to the people; if they ask for it then we try bring it in so they don’t have to travel so far and make as many trips to other stores. We all want to save on gas and we really want to be their one-stop store.”

While the inside inventory has grown, the equipment outdoors is in demand, as well. “The farm equipment continues to sell well, the demand is great in this area,” said Poling.

Burnips also sells equipment via the Internet through its new online auction service.

“We have moved a lot of equipment through the online auction site,” said Poling.

Hours have expanded too, at customer request. “We are now open until 8 p.m. on Wednesday nights because so many of the other stores in the area are open late on Wednesdays, and we are currently thinking about expanding our Saturday hours behind a noon closing time.”

Commenting on the success of the new location, she said, “The potential here is huge – we just have to continue to work hard to achieve it.”

Burnips Equipment Co. is located at 15838 Carleton Rd, Hudson, MI  49247. It can be contacted by phone at 517-448-2071. Store hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-noon. It is closed on Sunday.
