EAST LANSING, Mich. — The champions from the 2013 Michigan Dairy Expo were selected when the best of the state were on display at the Michigan State University Livestock Pavilion. Jeff Sayles of Ontario, Canada, spent July 19 traversing the show ring in search of his favorites among the color breeds.

The Jersey show consisted of 95 head for Sayles to sort through. For his Junior Champion he chose Blackview Guapo Terrific, the first-place winter calf exhibited by Stacy Lafferty of Amble, Mich., while his Reserve Junior Champion went to Buells Tradition Louise, the first-place fall calf exhibited by John Bowman of Addison.

Sayles chose Edgebrook Lady Gaga, the first-place senior two-year-old exhibited by Tera Koebel of Three Oaks, for his Intermediate Champion. Out of that same senior two-year-old class came the Reserve Intermediate Champion, Royalty Ridge G Fashionista-ET, exhibited by Nugent, McCauley and Moyer of Lowell.

Among the older cows, the Senior Champion went to the first-place aged cow, Cloverfield Centurion Ellie May-ET, exhibited by Craig Martin of Olivet. The Reserve Senior Champion is Miss Sambo Black Gold, the first-place five-year-old exhibited by Madison Moyer of Caro.

With all his champions in the ring, it was time for Sayles to choose the Grand Champion of the Jersey show. After much deliberation whether to go with his Senior or Intermediate champion, the older cow won out and Sayles tapped Cloverfield Centurion Ellie May-ET.

After that, things were a little easier as he chose Edgebrook Lady Gaga as his Reserve Grand Champion. The Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor honors of the Jersey show went to Drew and Deanne Buell of Temperance.

Med-O-Bloom Farms of Caledonia enjoyed a great day exhibiting in the Red and White show as it won Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the show.

In the heifer show, the Junior Champion banner went to Ms Tri Koebel Glamour-Red-ET, the first-place spring yearling exhibited by Greta Koebel and Kelly Epperly of Three Oaks. The Reserve Junior Champion was Signature Reality Nelly-Red, the first-place summer yearling exhibited by Kailey Sweers of Dansville.

The winning four-year-old, Jerland Advent Greta-Red-ET, found her way to the Grand Champion spot, exhibited by Greta Koebel and Kelly Epperly of Three Oaks. Med-O-Bloom Farms own the Reserve Grand Champion in Med-O-Bloom Leond Snowball-Red, the first-place five-year-old.

The big brown cows took their turn in the show ring and Sayles liked the summer yearling JASM Marthas Ruby, exhibited by Stacey Lafferty, for his Junior Champion.

The first-place fall calf Strautz-AAA Koors Cancun, exhibited by Rod-er-Dic Farm of Byron Center, won Reserve Junior Champion.

The Grand Champion of the Swiss show was a junior two-year-old, Cutting Edge P Give-ET exhibited by Alan, Moss and Renee McCauley of Lowell. Reserve Grand honors now belong to Blessing Oak View WD Gracie, the winning four-year-old exhibited by Kelvin Webster of Laingsburg.

Sayles had a quick trip through the Ayrshire show with only two head to evaluate. Daniel Carpenter of Dansville exhibited both the Junior Champion, Dandy’s Canadensis, and Reserve Junior Champion, Dandy’s Bronelle.
