Indiana farmers received 3 percent less for their products from mid-September to mid-October than in the previous 30-day period, reported Purdue University agricultural economists and state and federal agricultural statisticians. Hog prices declined 8 percent, cattle 2 percent, turkeys 5 percent and broilers 3 percent.

An old hen lives on the farm home of Mrs. Mary Alter near Milroy. She is a barred rock hen and Mrs. Alter knows her exact age, as she hatched the egg and raised the chicken into adulthood; that was 22 years ago. A family pet, she has good health, daily strolling around the premises as queen of the flock. But she has not laid an egg for several years.

Twenty-year-old Valynnda Fairchild, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Willis A. Fairchild of Shelbyville, was selected Miss Charolais USA at the annual Charolais Congress held during the American Royal Livestock Show in Missouri.

Indiana’s corn crop for this year is estimated to be the smallest since the Corn Leaf Blight of 1970, state and federal agricultural statisticians at Purdue reported, with soybean crop 28 percent smaller than last year’s – making this a seven-year low since 1967.

Because of the short supply and high demand, Kentucky burley farmers have been getting $1.67 per pound for their crop regardless of its quality since the market opened this season. The heavy demand prompted USDA Secretary Clayton Yuetter to announce four days after the sale began that farmers would be allowed to sell.

WGN Farm Broadcaster Orion Samuelson will be a key speaker during the Indiana-Illinois Farm Equipment Show this month. His topic will be “American Agriculture: From Russia to Brazil to China to the Great Plains.” He will discuss his trips this fall to those areas of the world.

Deere & Co. announced it will build a new factory in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, that will manufacture farm tractors for the existing and growing farming population there.
