HAT hosting seminars for farm show once again

By DEBORAH BEHRENDS
Illinois Correspondent

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — For the ninth consecutive year, Hoosier Ag Today will present seminars, sponsored by Sikich, at the Indiana-Illinois Farm Show on Dec. 16-18.
Hoosier Ag Today (a Farm World media partner) has gathered experts in a variety of fields to present clear-cut, practical information. The series also will feature the annual market outlook by Purdue University ag economist Chris Hurt. In addition, Jim Mintert with the Purdue Center for Commercial Agriculture will present a program on making the right choices from the new farm bill.
The three-day series will conclude with a market strategy program featuring several Indiana market analysts and futures traders from Chicago.
“We will again have a great free seminar series coordinated by Gary Truitt of Hoosier Ag Today,” said Show Manager Richard Sherman. “The series will focus on two of the hottest topics in agriculture today – drones and the new farm bill programs.”
Show hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. next Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday. All seminars will begin at 11 a.m. on the west side of the building, behind the familiar red curtain.
On Dec. 16, the focus will be on new technology and how to best apply it. Jim Love, a Boone County farmer and authority on the use of drones and robotics in farming, will present a program on the latest technology to increase productivity.
Also on the program will be Jim Shertzer, with FARMserver, a division of Beck’s Hybrids. He will discuss issues growers need to consider before sharing farm data, and how to best evaluate the data analysis services now available.
Todd Janzen, an attorney at Plews Shadley Racher and Braun, will be available to advise farmers on how to use drones and not get fined by the Federal Aviation Administration, and to discuss some of the legal and privacy issues surrounding the use of farm data.
On Dec. 17, Hurt will review the state of the farm economy and analyze forces likely to impact supply and demand for the coming year. His price forecast will help growers make production and management decisions. Mintert will show farmers some of the online tools that can help them make the right choices when signing up for the new crop risk management programs.
On Dec. 18, the focus will be on market strategy. Jim Riley, with Riley Trading of Brookston, Ind., will lay out some options for marketing your 2014 and 2015 crops. Representatives from EFG Group in Chicago will add the perspective of the futures market, while Mike Silver of Kokomo Grain will discuss the Indiana cash grain and bases market.
Seminars will be hosted by Hoosier Ag Today broadcasters Truitt, Andy Eubank and Cayla McLeland. Door prizes will be awarded, as well. To learn more, visit http://inilfarm.com
