10 years ago: Rushville FFAers travel to Brazil to study farming

1964: 50 years ago

December sale: 60 spotted gilts, $40 each; 40 spotted gilts, $50 each; 20 spotted bred gilts, $60 each; 20 spotted boars, $65 each; we deliver – Ralph Nixon, Springport, Ind.
Real estate for sale: 40-acre farm located one mile west of Spiceland and a half-mile south, fourth on the west side of road. Farm and equipment, priced at $12,000 – Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Craft, Spiceland, Ind.
A Gibson County cash grain farmer took the 1964 senior title in the Indiana Five-Acre Corn Growing contest. He is Ervin Neyhouse of Princeton. Neyhouse’s winning yield of 212.7 bushels an acre came despite a growing season that varied from drought to flooding. But, he explained, “We got the rain at the critical time in the crop’s development.”
1974: 40 years ago

Real estate for sale: Henry County, Ind., 165 acres, 100 acres of rich bottom lands, 34 acres of plateau land, for a total of 134 acres tillable; 200 rods of new fencing, 20,000-bushel capacity grain bins with dryer (new). Barn equipped for hogs, serviceable house, $950 per acre – Tri-County Real Estate, Cambridge City, Ind.
Auctioneer Dan Conway of New Castle was injured while working the Alger Finchum-David McFarland public auction. Conway suffered a bruised neck and numbness to his legs and arms when a steer got loose and pinned him against an angle iron. He was taken to the emergency room at New Castle for treatment, and later released.
Eli Puterbaugh, who says he was born in “Jackson Township, Randolph, Ind., USA” will be 100 years old on Jan. 2, 1975. At present he resides in Portland. He worked on his father’s farm until he was nearly 25.
He married a girl named Daisy, and although they had no children of their own, they adopted seven throughout the years, who belonged to relatives or no one at all. Puterbaugh has never known anyone who reached their 100th birthday, and he is counting the days.
1989: 25 years ago

Wayne County, Jefferson Township, Ind., real estate for sale: 234 acres, 185 acres tillable, older frame six-room house, four livestock barns with fence; close to Hagerstown, $292,500; owner wants sold this month – Lingle Real Estate, Richmond, Ind.
For years swine producers were told packers preferred slaughter hogs to weigh between 200-230 pounds, but things are changing, Dr. Gary Parker told farmers at a recent Kentucky pork conference. This weight range has increased so now the top dollar spread is for hogs ranging from 220-250 pounds. In some cases the range is from 230-260 pounds.
2004: 10 years ago

American and Japanese negotiators agreed to ease a 10-month ban on American beef exports to Japan – a deal that will reopen the U.S. beef industry’s biggest overseas market to at least some products.
Traveling to the country of Brazil to study agriculture from the Rushville FFA chapter were Katie Pickering, Rachel Dodd and Advisor Blair Orme. Jeremy Christman of Southern Wells accompanied the Rushville members as well. The group spent three weeks in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
