1965: 50 years ago
Losses were estimated at $10,000 in a fire that destroyed a large barn in the William Fogg Jr. farm northwest of Greensburg. Lost in the fire were three sows and 12 week-old pigs. Farm equipment destroyed in the fire included a forage chopper and two silage wagons. Escaping injury by leaving the burning building were 22 head of beef cattle. Darvin Fenter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Fenter of the Greenfield area, was the recipient of a purebred Hampshire gilt from the Mt. Vernon Future Farmers Chapter. The gilt was donated by last year’s president, Doug Donley, and produced eight pigs this past January, of which two will be returned to the FFA for distribution. Myron Laffoon of Lafayette has been elected president of the Indiana Pork Producers Assoc. for the coming year. Serving with Laffoon as vice president will be Ron Trotter, Columbus; Jim Foster, Animal Sciences Department at Purdue University, is secretary-treasurer; and William Nash of Sharpsville, Marion Stackhouse of Westfield, Harold Duncan of Veedersburg, Phil Metz of Greensburg and Bill Congleton of Frankfort will serve on the Executive Board. Shockney Seed Service, Farmland, Ind. – custom seed cleaning, 26 cents per bushel for small grain and soys; $1.50 per cwt. for timothy and clover; certified seed beans, good supply of Wells, Amsoy-71, Wayne, Calland, Williams, Bonus and Cutler-71, packed in 50-pound bags, $8 per bag; certified seed oats, 2 bushels per bag, are Clintford, $4.25 per bushel and Stout (new) and Noble (new), $4.75. Hardin County hog producer Jerry Jolly was named Producer of the Year by the Kentucky Pork Producers at its recent convention in Owensboro. Indiana Junior Charolais Assoc. officers for the 1990 year will be Anthony Witter, Bath, president; Nick Shelton of Crawfordsville, vice president; Brenda Thompson, Knightstown, treasurer; and Shelly Dalrymple of Rushville, secretary. Halderman Real Estate Services, Inc. sold at auction 165 acres of farmland in five parcels in rural Tipton County, Ind., for a total of $665,000. Kentucky state lawmakers have put the replacement of Phase II tobacco funded on the fast-track via legislation passed last week that would have money to the tune of $114 million in farmers’ pockets by spring. Auction sale results from sale held near Sabina, Ohio, with Johnny Regula as the auctioneer – a John Deere 9600 combine sold for $44,750 and a John Deere 1243 corn head brought $16,750; JD 8640 tractor brought $35,000 and a John Deere 4440 tractor went for $29,000; John Deere 7000 12-row planter bought $14,750; Krause 27-foot finishing tool sold for $12,750; and a Killbros grain cart brought $10,500. |
