1965: U.S. nearly free of hog cholera

1965: 50 years ago
The Federal Land Bank of Franklin has had another record year, having closed 91 loans in the face amount of more than $1.5 million for the calendar year of 1964. The association, in serving Bartholomew, Johnson and Shelby counties, is servicing 453 loans with a total outstanding of $4,792,304. Loran Drake is the manager of the association.
Students on the Spiceland FFA Honor Roll are Howard Magee, Jerry Gideon, Kent Bitler, Junior Apple, Leon Crabtree, Gary Crandall, Randy Coffman, Gary Cole, Sam Akers, Ron Myers, Don Crandall, Chris Bitler, Ron Fairchild, John Reuter and Dan LaBoyteaux. Max Taylor, chapter advisor and ag teacher, said to be on the roll, the students must have an average of C or better in all subjects.
For sale: 16 bred Holstein heifers, due to freshen in March. These heifers were retained by owners when the Bona Dea farm and herd were sold. Heifers are by DHIA-tested cows with records of 500-800 pounds butterfat – New Castle, Ind.

The entire United States is on its way to becoming free from hog cholera. The last outbreak of hog cholera in the 50 states occurred in Mississippi in February 1974.
Public auction – Everett “Dutch” Vandenberg of Whiteland, Ind., is quitting the dairy operation after 25 years of farming and will disperse his 90-head DHIA Holstein dairy cattle and dairy equipment later this month.
