WOODBURN, Ind. — In northern Indiana, NuTech/G2 Gen pulled ahead of other brands in the early-season test of seed corn hybrids by Farmers’ Independent Research of Seed Technologies (FIRST).
NuTech/G2 Gen’s 5F-008AM yielded 255.4 bushels per acre, followed by LG Seeds’ LG5533VT3PRIB with 253.5 bushels. Specialty variety 34A413 was third with 252.9 bushels per acre, on Rex Coomer’s Allen County farm.
For the 54 varieties tested, the average yield was 235.9 bushels per acre, with nearly 18 percent moisture and 1 percent lodging.
Disease pressure was a factor in the field, resulting in a yield loss of about 20-30 bushels per acre, said Rich Schleuning, FIRST site manager.
"A June 29 visit showed a nice-looking crop with corn smut, gray leaf spot, northern corn leaf blight and anthracnose. At harvest, ear and kernel rots were noted. Disease pressure impacted yield," Schleuning noted.
Coomer’s surrounding fields treated with fungicide, however, saw a 20-30 bushel per acre increase.
The top three performers earned $875, $873 and $868 per acre, respectively. Test average earnings were $809.
The previous crop was soybeans treated with glyphosate. The soil was described as clay loam, well drained, conventional with fall till and non-irrigated.
The crop was seeded on May 8 and harvested on Nov. 10.
For the full-season test on the same field, four brands yielded significantly higher than the test average of 236.4 bushels per acre: Specialty 42D843 with 259.2 bushels; LG Seeds LG5618STXRIB with 258.8 bushels; NK Brand N70J-3011A with 257.5 bushels, and NK Brand N67S-3110 with 256.6 bushels.
However, the top four brands that grossed the most dollars per acre were as follows: Specialty 42D843 at $881; NK Brand N67S-3110 at $879; AgriGold A6472VT3PRIB at $877, and Golden Harvest G10S30-3110 at $876.
Test average gross income was $806 per acre.
