25 years ago: Corn growers reject adoption of a checkoff

1965: 50 years ago

Larry Fleming of Jasper County won the top honor of being recognized as the Indiana Star Young Farmer at the yearly meeting held at Purdue University. Daniel Goar of Hagerstown was the runner-up.

Lawrence Gorman & Sons, Knightstown, Ind. – For sale: 6-by-7-foot hog houses, $54; 7-by-18-foot hog houses, triple, $154; 8-by-16-foot sleeper house, no floor $140; 9-by-18-foot sleeper house, no floor $180; 6-sow farrowing house with crates, $385.
1975: 40 years ago

The 1976 Prairie Farmer Farm Progress Show for the Bicentennial will be held on 1,100 acres owned and rented by Carl Shelby and his son-in-law, Monte Zapf. This farm is located five miles east of Greenfield between Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 40 in Hancock County. Scott McKinney will be manager for the show.
Noah Troyer of Sugar Creek, Ohio, sold a pair of 4-year-old Belgian mares, both in foal, for $7,200 at the annual Eastern States Draft Horse Sale in Columbus. The top-selling stallion was a 6-year old Belgian and brought $7,100. He was consigned by James Schmucker of Edon, Ohio.
A large crowd attended the dispersal sale of the Holstein dairy herd of Everett Vandenberg near Whiteland. The top cow in the herd sold for $1,125. The first 10 cows averaged $770, with 43 cows averaging $600 per head. Also, 100 tons of silage was sold for $23 per ton.
1990: 25 years ago

National Corn Growers Assoc. members rejected a proposal to establish a nationwide checkoff. The vote failed 102-93.

Louisville brothers Alfred and Richard Ochner could sell their 142-acre farm to developers, but they have lived there for more than 60 years and operated a dairy farm for more than 50 years, and don’t want to leave the homeplace. The estimated property value has been put between $10,000-$20,000 per acre, because of its location near the Shelbyville Road and Gene Snyder Freeway interchange.

USDA Secretary Mike Johanns said he is confident that the reopening of the Canadian border for beef and cattle under age 30 months will take place in early March.

Thanks to a group of former and present Henry County residents, a portion of a Low Dutch Colony meetinghouse – thought to be nearly 200 years old – has been preserved and is finding a new home just yards away from its original site near Pleasureville, Ky.
