1965: 50 years ago

The following 12 young men from The Farmer area completed the winter course at Purdue: Randal Cragun and Larry Rogers of Frankfort; Verlin Custer, Dennis Peggs, Charles Ariens and John McKay of Rushville; Richard Delay of Knightstown; James Rose of Connersville; Richard Swaim of Elwood; Dean Weismiller of Tipton; Richard Gordon of Lewisville; and Marion Scott of Muncie.
Winners in the Madison County 4-H and FFA poultry and egg judging contest were Travis Spegal, Darrel Noland and Stanley Cook, all members of the Lapel High School team.
The total number of cattle sold at the Producers Marketing Assoc. sale in Centerville was 200. Choice steers and heifers brought $21-$23.90 per cwt.; good, $18.50-$22.50; commercial, $17.50-$19.50; and utility, $16-$17.50.

Five new regional agronomists have been appointed by Funk Seeds International, Bloomington, Ill.: Ray Sullivan, Shelbyville, Ind.; Richard Goff, New Ulm, Minn.; Lester Mehlberg, Normal, Ill.; Dr. Richard Bohling, Ames, Iowa; and Dr. Kim Polizotto, Lafayette, Ind.
The new TSC Store on Highway 3 south of New Castle, Ind., will hold its Grand Opening celebration this month, when the store will feature door prizes along with free coffee and cookies. The store will be managed by Joe K. Smith.

Kentucky catfish producers had sales of $1 million in 1989, down 40 percent from 1988. On Jan. 1, 1990, production operations had 137,000 pounds of large fish; 245,000 pounds of medium-sized fish; 85,000 pounds of small-sized fish; 66,000 pounds of stockers; and 1,000 pounds of fingerlings.

AgriBusiness Network and Network Indiana, both of Indianapolis, and Rural Radio Network of New Palestine have merged. The new network will be called the AgriAmerica Network.

Moss Auction Team reports the sale at the Edgar Country Fairgrounds in Illinois of a four-piece 2001 John Deere 965 OSTS combine with four-wheel drive, selling for $99,500.
The North Montgomery Judging Team was the Overall Champion FFA Judging Team at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., this year. Team members were Colt Keefer, Lucas Neumayer, Jamey Albrecht, Ashley Hudson and Coach Adam Dryer.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has been honored with a 2005 Golden Plow award, given by the American Farm Bureau Federation and presented by its President Bob Stallman and Kentucky Farm Bureau President Sam Moore.
