1965: 50 years ago
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new Falmouth Farm Supply Co. located at Falmouth, Ind. The plant will be a modern bulk-out feed and grain operation. Custom grinding and mixing will be provided. Gordon Pavey, district salesman for Central Soya Co., McMillin Feed Division, and Keith Kehl, president of the corporation, participated in the ceremonies.
More than 50 head of cattle were rounded up by local police, marshals, the county sheriff and his deputies and all the volunteers they could get in Marshall County, Ind., when two Pennsylvania Railroad freight cars were derailed at Plymouth and the cattle escaped. Some of the cattle were killed and others escaped from the wrecked cars and wandered around the area; they were being shipped from Chicago to eastern livestock markets.
Ralph Nixon of Springport, Ind., has at private sale: Spotted Poland Males $65-$75; 20 head of gilts to farrow in April at $75 each; 20 head of gilts to farrow in May at $65 each; and 60 head of open gilts ready to breed at $50 each.

1975: 40 years ago

Thieves stole approximately 8,682 feet of copper wire from Public Service Indiana lines southwest of Greensburg. The wire was valued at more than $1,500. The thieves used wire cutters to remove the heavy-duty wire from the poles.
The Knightstown High School FFA team placed first in competition out of 117 teams competing, with a total of 494 individuals at the Purdue Invitational Livestock Judging contest. Team members were George Wilson, Bruce Cole, Myron Matlock and Dan Upchurch, Robert Wright is the team coach.
Real estate for sale: 255 acres, two sets of farm buildings, excellent barn and feed lot, setup to feed 200 head cattle, large metal tool shed, hog farrowing house, nearly all tillable. 1990: 25 years ago

The four 1990 winners of the Indiana Master Farmer award are Thomas Boyd, Washington; Merrill Kelsay, Whiteland; James Moseley, Clarks Hill; and William Pickart, Camden.
Kentucky State Police and the Garrard County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a cattle poisoning in Paint Lick of 35 cows, with three having died on Coby Ward’s farm ingesting an insecticide known as Furadan, which had been placed on the pasture and in a feed pump.

2005: 10 years ago

Kentucky tobacco growers are one step closer to receiving their Phase II replacement, as the state’s General Assembly passed a budget recently that included a provision to replace Phase II with $27 million from Ag Development Funds (Phase I) and the selling of bonds to cover the remaining funds.
President George W. Bush nominated Charles F. Conner to be deputy secretary of agriculture. Conner is from Indiana and holds a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, and currently is the White House farm advisor.
