1965: 50 years ago

Leo Craig of Delphi exhibited the Grand Champion Boar at the Indiana Duroc Breeders Show and Sale in Indianapolis. The August boar sold for $340 to the Harry Lugar Family of Camby, Ind. The Grand Champion Gilt was exhibited by Guy Jackson of Warren, Ind., and sold to Potter Farms of Jacksonville, Ill., for $255.
The Hagerstown FFA Team will go to State Contest in the Parliamentary Procedure competition at Purdue University this summer.
Team members are Max Smith, Larry Smith, James Doerstler, Mike Doerstler, Bob Clark, Mark Mendenhall, Dan Howell, Don Baker, Steve Davis and Dion Ammerman.

1975: 40 years ago

Purdue’s Livestock Judging Team finishes fourth in its first major intercollegiate livestock judging contest held at Omaha, Neb., out of 19 teams competing.
Team members were Mark Pickering, Lewisville; Joe Vogel, North Manchester; Scott Williamson and James Eskridge, La Porte; David Hirt, Greensburg; Kevin Swain, Marshall; Craig Schrader, Columbia City; Douglas Harvey, Connersville; Carey Clouser, Windfall; and Mark Baird, Valparaiso. Dr. Roger Hunsley is the team coach and associate professor of animal sciences at Purdue.
At the recent feeder pig sale held at Southeastern Indiana Feeder Auction’s facilities located between Versailles and Osgood, 1,446 pigs were sold.
They weighed an average of 75 pounds.
The average price was $66.94 per hundred and $50.61 per head.
This resulted in a gross of more than $73.1 thousand to the 50 farmers who were consignors.

The Soviets have agreed to buy 10 million tons of grain, 4 million in corn, 4 million in wheat and the balance in corn, wheat, soybeans or soymeal.
The nation’s dairy plants produced 52 million gallons of ice cream during January 1990. U.S. butter production during January 1990 was 127.1 million pounds. American cheese production totaled 231.7 million pounds for the month. Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 483.7 million pounds.
Many young elementary school students are learning how to plant trees thanks to the several Kentucky Soil Conservation Districts who are giving local students small white pine trees to plant.
