1965: 50 years ago

Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Olinger of Daleville, Ind., were awarded a $6,160 settlement in Circuit Court as the result of condemnation proceedings brought against their property by the state. The condemnation suit involved construction of a segment of Interstate 69, 1.5 miles south of Daleville.

A wedding ring lost on a Decatur County farm 40 years ago was worn by its owner on her 90th birthday. Mrs. Lena Fry lost her wedding ring in the barnyard on the Fry farm in 1924, which was the same year her husband, George, passed away. A neighbor digging in the ditch found the ring and returned it to her.

Home and furnishings belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Duane Retter of Lynn, Ind., were lost in a recent blaze caused by lighting. No one was home at the time of the fire.

1975: 40 years ago

Terry Abernathy of Liberty, who farms land owned by Tom Wewe of Richmond, discovered three men loading onto a truck fertilizer he had stored in the barn. Abernathy shouted at the men and two of them ran away, but he detained the third at the scene and called a message for help on a citizens’ band radio in his pickup truck. It was heard by operators in the area, and the message relayed to the county sheriff, who came to arrest the thief.

The fifth barn fire in three days and the sixth in less than a week are suspected to be arson in Hancock County, and an investigation is being conducted.

1990: 25 years ago

Indiana remained in second place among all states in chicken inventory numbers as of Dec. 1, 1989, with 27.2 million birds. Indiana’s hens and pullets of laying age totaled 20.8 million as well, good for second place behind California, which had 30.6 million.

A recent cold blast damaged many Kentucky and southern Indiana wheat crops with freezing temperatures in the mid- to low 20s.

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.), joined by a bipartisan group of 19 senators, introduced the Fuels Security Act of 2005 this month. This legislation would more than double the production and use of domestic renewable fuels including ethanol, biodiesel and fuel produced from cellulosic biomass.
