1965: 50 years ago

The Foundation of North American Indian Culture will have its permanent headquarters in three Indiana communities, moving there from Bismarck, N.D. The only Indiana organization concerned with Indian culture in the country will have headquarters at Vernon, ceremonial center at Nashville and a national Indian center near Bedford.

Ross Retherford, 76, a Union County farmer, suffered bruises and abrasions when he was attacked by a bull at the farm of his son, Ted, near Liberty, Ind.

Richmond State Hospital’s Holstein herd led the DHIA productions in Wayne County for the month of March. Loren Cates and Thomas & Parshall had honor cows with the hospital, the Charles Miller family and Hill and Jenkins having the honor heifers. The Miller family had a Jersey herd and all others are Holstein herds.

1975: 40 years ago

Demand still strong for feeder pigs. Feeders averaged 67 pounds and brought $74.74 per hundred for a total of $50.05 per head at the recent Southeastern Indiana Feeder Pig Auction near Versailles, Ind.

Mike Babcock was named Ohio Young Cattleman of the Year at this year’s Ohio Beef Expo. He raises Polled Hereford cattle and lives in Washington County.

IBP, ConAgra and Cargill are the top three pork processors. ConAgra is the largest lamb processor and the largest flour miller; Cargill controls one-quarter of the world’s grain trade and is the country’s No. 1 egg producer, No. 2 soybean crusher and flour miller and No. 3 corn and wheat miller. All three corporations accounted for 70 percent of all fed cattle slaughtered in the United States.

2005: 10 years ago

President George W. Bush nominated Rep. Bob Portman (R-Ohio) for U.S. Trade Representative. Portman replaced Robert Zoellick of Virginia.

A little more than 121 acres of prime farmland in southwestern Ohio was sold at auction last month by Halderman Real Estate Services for $413,000. The land was in Clinton County and sold in two tracts.
