1965: 50 years ago

A bituminous resurfacing and patching program calling for improvement to 538.3 miles of highway in all parts of Indiana was approved by the Indiana State Highways Commission. The cost of the entire program will be $6,509,500.

Palm Sunday was “Dark Day” for Indiana as 37 tornados were recorded hitting three states in the Midwest – Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. The town of Russiaville was left without a building untouched; the trailer court near Elkhart and the town of Elkhart, severely damaged; the town of Dunlap, almost destroyed; Lebanon and surrounding areas, hard hit; and Marion, badly hit, including the Veterans Hospital where the roof of the hospital was ripped off in the storm.

1975: 40 years ago

More than 2,000 White Leghorn hens were given away recently by David Rust, president of Rose Acre Farms, Inc. of Seymour, to emphasize the low prices farmers are receiving for eggs and hens. Eggs have gone from 62 cents a dozen to 49 cents and the price for hens has gone from 24 cents a chicken to 14-16 cents.

As part of its drafting of the 1990 farm bill, a House Agriculture subcommittee voted down a measure that would have dramatically increased the loan rate for wheat and feed grains.

The 108-year-old Ohio State Fair operates on funds generated by the rental of the fairground and buildings throughout the year, parking fees and revenue from the fair itself, states Shane Jenkins, Ohio State Fair Board spokesman. State general revenue funds are not used in the day-to-day operation of the 56 buildings on 360 acres, half of which is parking.
