Singing and cheese were just two of Mom’s talents

With Mother’s Day coming up I started thinking about days gone by. My mother was a character all her life, starting very young.
As a little girl she took violin lessons with one of her friends and they did a little singing, as well. One year for Mother’s Day she and her friend were asked to play and sing during the Mother’s Day kids’ celebration at the Methodist Church.
Back in that time it never dawned on the Sunday School teachers to inquire about what their entertainment would be. They just thought Sunday School kids were cute and whatever they wanted to do would be just fine. Big mistake.
The girls took the stage and started playing their violins, then broke into song.
They sang:
Show me the way to go home
I’m tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head.
Sunday School teachers rushed in from all directions and ushered them off the stage, with the girls unaware of what they had done wrong.
That episode took place about 87 years ago, and no kid has ever entertained at the church since then before being given the third-degree about what they were going to do.
My aunt, who is 92-and-a-half, still remembers it quite vividly and can really entertain telling that story. Here’s a recipe with which you can entertain any moms in your life, while singing their praises this week.
Mother’s Cheese Marbles

1 jar (5 ounces) Old English spreading cheese
1/4 cup of butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup of flour
Cream together the cheese and butter. Sift together the salt and flour and mix well with the cheese and butter.
Make 1-inch balls with the mixture and put them on a greased baking sheet. Chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and bake these for about 10 minutes. You can enjoy them warm to snack on, or you can do as Mother did by garnishing or stirring them in with tuna or chicken salad.
They add a nice kick to potato soup even if they don’t hold their marble shape. You can also marinate some mushroom caps in Italian salad dressing and mix them with the cheese marbles for a nice snack or unusual side dish.
