Truth From the Trenches: 'Purity promises' in milk is just creative marketing
By MELISSA HART
Truth From the Trenches column

There is another new milk product on the market, and it’s kind of got people in an uproar. It’s called DairyPure and it is gathering fans with its “five-point purity promise.”
While I am not trying to advertise for their product, I do want to share with you the aforementioned purity promise just so you know why this milk is better than all the rest.
•Their milk contains no artificial growth hormones
•All of their milk is tested for antibiotics
•Their milk is continually quality-tested to ensure purity
•Their milk comes from cows fed a healthy diet
•Their milk is cold shipped fresh from your local dairy
Wait – this sounds like our milk!
We don’t give our cows any artificial growth hormones and we are always tested for antibiotics. Every sample of milk from every farm is tested to ensure its purity. And of course our cows are fed a healthy diet, and our milk is 34 degrees Fahrenheit when it leaves the farm, so we know it’s “cold shipped.”
So just exactly what makes DairyPure different from all the other milk that floods into the same processing plant? Nothing.
Oh yes, the label may be different and the price may reflect the DairyPure five-point purity promise, but the milk inside is the same as all the other milk in the store. It’s like taking sliced pineapple, putting it into a can and slapping the Dole label on some of them and a Great Value label on the rest.
They all come from the same place; just a different label with different, more interesting marketing.
When I first saw the commercial for this on TV, I was frustrated they were marketing milk just like ours but making it sound so much better.
But as I thought about it, I realized they were the forward-thinking folks and we all should get on the five-point purity promise bandwagon.
In fact, we could add five more points and make it a perfect 10-point purity promise:
•Our milk is free from pesticides
•Our milk is 100 percent gluten-free
•Our milk contains no high fructose corn syrup
•Our milk contains no artificial colors
•We don’t spit in our milk (I wonder how well this one would get noticed?)
Regardless of the whitewashed promises that can be said about all milk produced in this country, if people will pick out this milk because of these promises then great – more power to them.
If moms are more confident in this product because they know this milk is a safe, nutrient-dense food that should be a part of their children’s balanced diet, then who am I to argue? The bottom line is we produce a safe, nutritious product that all people should be consuming – for the health of it.
