1965: 50 years ago

Costly corn faces a price tumble as use slows and crop hopes brighten. Corn sells in Chicago for $1.33-1/2 per bushel, 8-1/2 cents more than a year ago, and near a five-year July high.

Indiana Duroc queen, Miss Narda Shawver, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Shawver of Walton, will participate in the National Duroc Queen Contest at the Duroc Congress in Des Moines, Iowa, this month.

John Nigh of Maxwell was named Indiana Star Farmer at the state’s Future Farmers of America convention at Purdue University this month.

1975: 40 years ago

Three businesses in downtown Lapel were destroyed or damaged. The Cascadden grocer was totally destroyed in the blaze, with the neighboring Lapel Savings and Loan and State Bank of Lapel suffering smoke damage. Cause of fire has not been determined yet.

Tim Hesselbrock of Okeana, Ohio, was recently named winner of the 1975 DeKalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award. Tim graduated from Ross Senior High School and plans to attend the agriculture short course at Purdue and return to the farm full-time.

Citizens Federal Savings & Loan Assoc., New Castle, Ind., offering 7.5 percent annual rate of interest on new investment certificates with 48 month maturities of $10,000 minimum; 6.75 percent interest for $5,000, for 30 months maturity; 6.5 percent interest on $1,000, for 12 months maturity; and 5.75 percent for $1,000 minimum on 6 months maturity. Regular Passbook Savings Accounts 5.25 percent per annum on any amount, withdraw anytime without notice.

1990: 25 years ago

Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Division of Wildlife officers recently captured and relocated a 150-pound male black bear after it was found in Vinton County. The bear was discovered in a tree across the street from an elementary school in the village of McArthur. The young bear bore a West Virginia DNR identification tag.

Real estate for sale: 400-acre Shelby County farm with lease back returning 7 percent. Owner will also consider a cash sale. Excellent headquarters farm with home, 250,000-bin grain drying and storage, shop and four large metal storage buildings. Farm has 3-phase and natural gas for grain dryers. ASCS shows 387.6 acres of tillage with a 291.5-acre corn base; $1,875 an acre – Sirkus Agency, Shelbyville, Ind.

Southern Indiana and parts of northern Kentucky struggle with flooded fields that remain to be planted. In most parts of these states it is too late to plant corn that will mature before normal frost dates this fall. Many are considering switching to short-season soybeans.

2005: 10 years ago

Theft of meth ingredient leads to cattle deaths in Richland, Mich. Ammonia gas leaked into a barn after thieves left open a fertilizer tank valve, killing about 30 cattle, with 10 more expected to die, reports Walt Stafford, livestock owner. Loss is estimated to be more than $100,000 worth of beef cattle.
