1965: 50 years ago

 

Real estate for sale: 93 acres in Rushville Township, modern home, good fences, water in every field, excellent land, good buildings, priced at $40,000 – Lowell Nail, Milroy, Ind.

The Sudex pasture on the Jack McClanahan farm in Center Township of Centerville, Ind., is being destroyed by chinch bugs, a tiny bright red in color when born and changing to grey and white, to black and white, as they develop. The bugs have destroyed a large area of the emergency pasture on the 240-acre dairy farm.

Joseph E. Hodson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Worth Hodson and a member of the Mays FFA Chapter, has been notified he will receive the American Farmer Degree at the national convention of the FFA in Kansas City in October. This is the highest degree attainable to an FFA member, and is the first to be awarded a Rush County resident.

1975: 40 years ago

The new home of the Farm Credit Bank of Louisville, Riverview Square, was dedicated Sept. 2 at Louisville Gardens, marking the formal opening of the structure in the heart of the city’s financial district. The Reverend William W. Slider, minister of Christ Church United Methodist in Louisville, performed the dedication.

AES Commemorative Medallions were presented to three distinguished Hoosiers: State Sen. Wayne Townsend, Hartford City; Dr. Arthur G. Hansen, president of Purdue University; and Dr. Don Paarlberg, director of agricultural economics for the USDA. Presentations were made by Dr. R.L. Kohls, Purdue’s dean of agriculture, at a banquet at Purdue attended by some 250 leaders of agriculture and agribusiness, government and education throughout the state.

1990: 25 years ago

A revolutionary new seed metering system that dramatically increases the planting accuracy for soybeans, cotton (acid-delinted) and milo/grain sorghum has been introduced by Kinze Manufac-turing, Inc. of Williamsburg, Iowa.

The independent life of a 90-year-old Hoosier family business will come to an end under terms of agreement announced last week with Excel Corp., a division of Cargill. Emge meat-packing company of Fort Branch has been sold to Excel, but the Emge brand name will be continued.

Purdue University’s Animal Science Department recently announced the retirement of one its longtime faculty members, Carol H. Noller, who has served as a professor of animal nutrition since 1964.
