RECALLING OUR ROOTS 1965: 50 years ago Hoosier 4-H club members numbering nearly 95,000 – a record enrollment, with 3,591 clubs throughout the state, consisting of 57,500 girls and 37,438 boys. They completed 173,000 projects. William Hilton, Morristown, Ind., drove the Champion Berkshire Gilt at the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minn. The gilt is from a litter that certified at the Berkshire Type Conference, cutting 29.9 length, 1.42 back fat and 4.85 loin eye. One of the certification entries had the highest percent of lean cuts of the total 102 entries, 56.94. Diamond Laboratories of Des Moines, Iowa, has received approval to market a TGE vaccine for the prevention of transmissible gastroenteritis in swine. 1975: 40 years ago Harbour Ranch 4-H Steer & Heifer Calf Sale located at Noblesville, Ind., is selling 100 steers from Chianina x Angus; Simmental x Hereford; Hereford x Angus Hereford; Angus; and 15-20 Registered Hereford heifers. Used trucks for sale: 1961 Ford F500 2-ton, $3,295; 1975 Ford 3/4-ton F250, 4x4, $5,695; 1974 Ford Ranger F100, $4,395; 1972 Ford 3/4-ton F250, $2,895; 1974 Ford Ranger FLT F100, $4,295 – Friendly Ford Sales, Greenfield, Ind. Seven bids were submitted for rental of farmland on the old county farm, when the Union County commissioners met recently. Bids ranged from $6,000-$11,000 per year, with Donald Barnard being the highest bidder. His was in the amount of $11,000, which averages about $97.34 per acre, per year. 1990: 25 years ago Five finalists have been named in the annual Young Farmer Award Program sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. This year’s finalists are Dennis and Peggy Gilbert, Angola; Lynn and Pamela Hawbaker, Geneva; Mark and Joy Waldo, Eaton; Terry and Susan Hayhurst, Farmersburg; and David and Sherri Hoar, Campbellsburg. Three hundred-nineteen head of Registered Jerseys passed through the sale ring of the renowned dairy herd dispersal of Mayfield Farms in Athens, Tenn. Gross sales were more than $430,000 with an average of $1,350. Dispersal of the Mayfield Dairy Plant earlier in the year was to Illinois-based Dean Foods Co. John L. Fox, Shelbyville, Ind., was inducted into the Indiana Livestock Breeders Hall of Fame at the Indiana State Fair earlier this year. One of his greatest accomplishments was in 1954 when he showed the Grand Champion Barrow over all breeds at the Ohio, Illinois and Indiana state fairs. No other producer has repeated this feat.
