Michigan Wheat Program field day set for June 14

LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Wheat Program’s 2017 Summer Wheat Field Day is just around the corner.

This year’s program is set for Wednesday, June 14, at the MSU Plant Pathology Research Center, 3735 College Road, in Lansing. On-site check-in begins at 8:15 a.m., and wagons load for the plot tour presentations in the field at 9 a.m.

The wagon tour stops feature presentations on wheat diseases; breeding high-performance wheat; weed control research; macros, micros, and magical mixes; and wheat establishment. After lunch, additional presentations are planned, including a report about activities of the National Assoc. of Wheat Growers (NAWG), a 2017 Market Outlook and a Looking Ahead to Harvest presentation. Register at miwheat.org under “What’s Hot” in the left margin of the page. Registration is requested to ensure adequate handouts, lunch and site arrangements. There is no cost to attend the Michigan Wheat Program’s Summer Field Day thanks to the Michigan Wheat Program and additional support from the Michigan Crop Improvement Assoc.
 
Cattlemen to gather in Lansing area for annual summer event

LANSING, Mich. — Cattle producers from around the state will gather in the Greater Lansing Area on June 23-24 for the annual Michigan Cattlemen’s Association Summer Round-Up.

The MCA Summer Round-Up is hosted by local MCA members and features opportunities for all cattle producers to learn and network with one another. “The event includes opportunities for everyone,” says MCA President Carl Vander Kolk. “Anyone interested in the cattle industry is encouraged to attend.”

The Round-Up gets started at 1 p.m. June 23 at the Michigan State University Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH), 4125 Beaumont Road, East Lansing.

The first portion of the program will include a variety of important topics, including:

•Finding the Right Diagnosis - Why DCPAH’s expert veterinary diagnostics should be part of you cattle health program.

•Animal Disease Traceability and RFID – This session will cover Michigan’s cattle identification rules, how RFID information is captured, and what happens in a TB trace investigation.

•MSU Beef Center- An overview of the MSU Beef Center’s teaching, research and extension focus. The second portion will take place at the MSU Beef Center Farms. Participants will rotate between two tracks:

•Track 1 – RFID and Animal Husbandry – Explore the advancements the RFID technology and learn to use these tools for record keeping and management. Learn cattle husbandry techniques including correct tag placement, implanting techniques and injection procedures.

•Track 2 – Research that Matters to Cattlemen Join researches at the MSU feedlot and learn firsthand how MSU research applies to cattlemen. Projects will be displayed in multiple stations throughout the facility. The action then moves to the Banquet and Conference Center of DeWitt for an evening that includes a social hour, the MCA Annual Awards banquet, and a keynote address from National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President Craig Uden, an Elwood, Neb., cattleman. Afterward, relax with fellow cattle producers and participate in the live auction.

The popular agriculture tour begins Saturday morning. Tour stops include GGS Genetics, Stony Creek Essential Oils, and AgroLiquid. The tour concludes with a lunch featuring barbecued beef brisket.

The MCA Summer Round-Up is an excellent way for producers from around the state to network, share ideas and find solutions to challenges. Anyone with an interest in the cattle industry is welcome and encouraged to attend. Governor names members of Michigan Wheat Program board

LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Rick Snyder’s office announced his appointments to the board of the Michigan Wheat Committee in May. Three terms on the board were up for appointment or reappointment.

“Gov. Rick Snyder today announced the appointment of Marc Hasenick of Springport as well as the reappointments of Sally McConnachie of Deckerville and David Milligan of Cass City to the Michigan Wheat Promotion Committee.”

Housed within the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the nine-member committee oversees the wheat marketing program and is comprised of wheat farmers from across Michigan. Appointees serve three-year terms, expiring May 31, 2020. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
