Beef recalled due to E. coli scare

LOUISVILLE, Ky — More than 22,000 pounds of beef are being recalled by the Louisville-based Creation Gardens due to a possible E. coli contamination.
 
The whole-food supplier is recalling raw ground beef and beef primal cut products after in-plant inspection personnel were notified of two positive E. coli test results.

The products were shipped to food service stores in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee with the establishment number of “EST. 7914”. The recalled products were reportedly produced between May 31 and June 2. Creation Gardens supplies more than 1,500 restaurants across Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Ohio.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” said the recall announcement. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.” This is just one of many which have recently hit the country. On May 31, Smucker Foods issued a nationwide recall of four of its flour brands, citing E. coli concerns.

That recall affected 20 pound bags of flour from four of its flour brands. Chipotle is also still recovering from an E. coli scare that cropped up in late 2015. Its April 2017 sales mark was the first move out of the red for the Denverbased company.

E. coli O157:H7, the strain which caused Creation Gardens to issue the recall, is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps two to eight days after exposure to the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome with the symptoms of easy bruising, an unhealthy pale appearance and decreased urine output.

Consumers with food safety questions can “Ask Karen,” the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov or by calling the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854. Requests for comment were not returned.
