Views and opinions: The title may not always make the song, but can make it memorable

BITTERSWEET, Ky. — In going through the latest chart-topping songs, I found myself paying more attention to the titles themselves as opposed to the artists. I realized many country songs have unusual and entertaining titles.

Well, once I had that on my mind, I decided to do a little research and see just how crazy some of these titles can get and what artists are associated with them. One of the first songs that caught my eye was performed by Deena Carter back in 1995, entitled “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”

This is a typical country song from a female perspective, which was somewhat successful when it released. In fact, it was the title track of her first album. The single reached the No. 25 spot on the charts, while the album hit No. 2.

Being a horse lover, the next song that got my attention was “Beer for My Horses” performed by Toby Keith and featuring Willie Nelson. I remember this song well and really like it. It came out in 2003 and was featured on the Unleashed album. This was a chart-topping single, and was certified platinum for the duet.

At the risk of getting a PG rating, I have to include the Joe Nichols hit “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.” This is a somewhat typical country drinking song and was a hit for him back in 2005, from the album Joe Nichols: III.

One of my favorite singers, Sammy Kershaw, had a hit in 1993 with “Queen of My Double-Wide Trailer.” This was a big hit (No. 7) for Kershaw off his Haunted Heart album and came at the peak of his charting career. I really like all of Kershaw’s music, but this was my favorite of his album releases.

“Bubba Shot the Jukebox” turned out to be a hit for Mark Chesnutt in 1992 off the Longnecks and Short Stories album, one of Chesnutt’s best. It is your basic redneck country song but it is fun to listen to, and most of us country music fans have a little redneck in us, anyway.

Okay, one more in a vast ocean of country songs with crazy titles: I’ll finish with “You’re the Reason our Kids are Ugly,” a duet by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. I must tell you how popular these two country music superstars were back in the day (the song released in 1978).

And, believe it or not, this is a country love song. It’s fun and brings back a lot of memories, as do all of these songs.

I suppose as long as there is country music, we can expect a few more entertaining titles in the future.
