Farm College program geared toward new producers
Are you a small farm landowner wondering what to do with your acreage? Are you interested in exploring options for land uses but not sure where to turn or how to begin? Have you considered adding an agricultural or horticultural enterprise but you just aren’t sure what is required, from an equipment, labor, and/or management perspective? Are you looking for someplace to get basic farm information? If you or someone you know answered yes to any of these questions, then the OSU Extension Small Farm College program may be just what you are looking for.</p><p>
The Small Farm College is a nine-session short course that will be held one night a week. This eight-week course will be offered in two separate locations within Ohio. One of those is in Butler County, Ohio. It will be held at the United Food Workers Union Hall, 913 Lebanon Street in Monroe, Ohio beginning Monday, Jan. 28. The course will continue each succeeding Monday until March 17. The classes will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at 9:30 p.m. The ninth session is a farm tour on Saturday, March 15.</p><p>

The second college location will be held in Rio Grande, Ohio at the University of Rio Grande, McKenzie Hall – Room 105. The course begins on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and continues through Tuesday, March 11. </p><p>

Topics that will be covered in the Small Farm College course include: “Getting Started” (goal setting, resource inventory, business planning); “Where to Get Assistance” (identifying various agencies, organizations, and groups); “Natural Resource Management including soils, ponds, streams, woodlands and wildlife;” “Legal Issues; Finances & Record Keeping;” “Crop
and Horticultural Production Options;” “Animal Production Options;
and Marketing Alternatives.”</p><p>
The cost of the course is $150 per person and $50 per each additional family member. </p><p>
Each participant will receive a small farm college notebook full of the information presented in each class session plus additional materials. Registrations are now being accepted and are limited to the first 50 registrants. Deadline to register is Jan. 11. </p><p>
