Ohio elementary students learn value of farming

By DOUG GRAVES

WILMINGTON, Ohio — The rural landscape doesn’t get any richer than in Clinton County.

But surprisingly, in this Ohio county of 45,000, fewer than 15 percent of the population lives on an operating farm.

Just to make sure schoolchildren in this county know that eggs don’t originate from Kroger’s, Clinton County agriculture officials and local farmers visited with them at the Clinton County Fairgrounds for the annual Farm Fair.

Six hundred second-graders from six county schools learned a lot about agriculture during this five-hour trip to the fairgrounds.
There, the children learned about a variety of farm animals and the importance of plants, soil and water and products on the store shelves that are derived from the farm.

There were three sessions and each involved 200 children. Every 15 minutes, the groups rotated among nine stations.
